The Australian Medical Association is welcoming reforms allowing GPs to prescribe medicinal cannabis meaning patients no longer need to see a specialist.

However if the patient is under the age of 16 or has a history of drug use they will be referred to a specialist.

AMA WA president Dr Andrew Miller says GPs are now better equipped to prescribe the drug, given they have access to more data than was previously available.

Oliver Peterson spoke with Dr Andrew Miller and Little Green Pharma Managing Director Fleta Soloman.

Medicinal cannabis subject of new inquiry

Barriers to accessing medicinal cannabis will be scrutinised during a parliamentary inquiry which will look at how Australia regulates the drug.

The Greens won support for the inquiry 35 votes to 31 on Thursday, with Labor and crossbench senators helping the minor party to defeat the government.

The Senate's community affairs committee will look at the suitability of medicinal cannabis for government subsidies through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

It will also compare Australia's regime to other countries and investigate training and education of doctors in relation to the treatment.

The committee is due to report on February 12 next year.

Just more corporate BS in reality but if everyone thinks it's great it's all we will ever get I suppose

As I've said before Mongy, We've gotta start somewhere. At least they've been pulled to the table (kicking and screaming admittedly (35 votes to 31 against the govt)) and it's being discussed, with a final report date. That's more of a start than we've had before politically speaking. And then for the AMA to support :shock: WTF, that is very surprising. Historically they've one of the most vocal against canna.
