Just had 3 new seeds crack overnight in glass of water. Transferred to wet towel method ( on plate) on a heatmat. Will put them in a 2 inch soil pot in a day or 2, once taproot shows more prominently. Once I move them to soil, should I put the pots on a windowsill ( facing sun), or are they ok to leave on heatmat( in darkness) until they just pop the surface of the soil ?? Some seedbanks advise there is no need for ANY light until seeds break surface of soil, which seems contrary to nature?

Just me, I'd put them straight into the soil now and keep in a warm place. They don't need light until they crack the surface as they can't see it anyway if they're underground :)

Thanks MLG. So it makes absolutely no difference if there is any light, or not, available to surface of soil, until the seed actually breaks the surface ?? Not trying to be difficult, just reading conflicting advice on various forums. I'm trying to learn, that's why I've come here.

All good. We are usually pretty helpful here...!

No, makes no difference until it reaches the surface. Maybe ppl suggest this as some lights give off heat? I've sometimes left mine for 2 or 3 days and come back to them after they've well and truly popped the surface.
