Taking away the hours on your timer. The end of the lights  on that day if it is to turn off by itself Is 0 for me. next lights off is day 1. The plants from that time on are being adjusted on a cellular level i think. Then you will have a baseline to gauge your time for first buds appearance. When changing strains then notice the difference and understand it more. possibly. IT as a baseline gives you the opportunity to see differences and understand more . then you can apply what you know and see the days to bud reduce and have the knowledge you have correctly done whatever.  Is one method.
