Police crack Canberra cannabis syndicate

Recommended Posts

Police say they have broken the back of an alleged major national cannabis syndicate operating in Canberra for the past two years.

Police involved in Operation Stolid have raided 34 rental homes used for cultivating hydroponic cannabis and seized around $2 million worth of drugs and have arrested 20 people.

Detective Superintendent Leanne Close says the crackdown began almost two years ago after a tip-off from South Australian police that members of the syndicate were targeting Canberra.

"The operation focussed on an organised criminal syndicate here in the ACT who were primarily using private rental premises to undertake their activities," she said.

"They would set up elaborate systems for cannabis hydroponic cultivation, generally destroying or seriously damaging those premises in the process, and cultivating the cannabis, as we said."
