The bubbling process, as merlin describes is at a microscopic level. It's called dissolved oxygen and the same principal is achieved when leaching gold out of rock. Oxygen is pumped into leach tanks of slurried rock with cyanide and the DO accelerates oxidizing reactions, allowing the gold to be leached out faster.

 

The same is true for root development and watering. The oxygen dissolves within the nutrient mix then provide a boost of oxygen for the rootmass whether it is a bubbler in dwc or a bubbler in a tank that is used for run to waste.

 

I wonder if using pure oxygen instead of just air would work better in dwc. I might patent it and call it superponics... with the right marketing it'd make a mint whether it works or not... all you DC (seems you can't have a post without calling someone a DC on here lately) would buy it...
