I'd like to start a discussion about organic growing, particularly using living organic soils, pro-biotic and no-till growing techniques. I build artisan quality living organic soil at a semi-commercial scale and would love to hear from the general community. Cheers!

Hi carbcon, the most important input is the humus: worm castings and compost. All of our inputs have been chosen for maximum effectiveness per cm3 of container space... No blood, bone meals or guano in our soil. We've sourced the best quality matured thermophilic compost and worm castings from our area... Local biology is important for pest and disease resistance. All inputs include: scoria for aeration, canadian sphagnum peat moss, charged biochar, malted barley for enzymes and chitin to aid in nutrient cycling and pest resistance, paramagnetic basalt rock dust for slow release trave elements and soil structure, soft coral lime from Gippsland, natural gypsum for sulfur and calcium, neem meal and kelp meal for nutrition and pest resistance. The final blend is balanced from an elemental perspective, providing optimal environment for soilfoodweb... Provided good watering technique is applied.

Agree on the castings. So big bio castings are used? Says on your website out mix on their compound, somfair to assume?

 

Not trying to be critical, those big bio castings are top top quality I hear.

 

I have even tried to get some locally but not in stock and postage is killer on em.

Yes, we have worked and continue to work very closely with Circular Food who produce the Big Bio worm castings... Incredible biological diversity in them, amazing stuff... I think they are only doing business to business trading at the moment but I do stock some of their castings most of the time. We now have our own facility that we blend and package. Great to hear you mix your own soil... Let me know if I can help with anything.

They are not cheap, they are the real deal though. Alot of commercial worm castings you buy is simply compost with some worms through them. Big Bio are real, pure worm castings. Also, it aint cheap producing commercial quantities of worm castings at scale in an urban setting... As our processes improve, the cost will come down though. Food waste is from local council restaurants and coffee grinds in beds of mature compost. The food waste is dried in rapid composting units before being fed to worms to ensure destruction o any potential pathogenic organisms...
