The price of Light.

Recommended Posts

G'day All,

I thought it might be interesting to see how much lights cost, as in per month, quarter. And how much it varies from state to state. I cant post any information myself as I'm not growing.........yet B) Please list what sort of light, wattage and state, if possible, and I'm sure it could become an invaluable resource. :thumbsup

Oh, and if a similair Topic has already been discussed, sorry for the repetition, and could you please point me.. towards the light.....he he :smoke :D

Hi Guys,

I too am only new at this but i have a grow in progress at the moment. I have had to start from scratch and i bought all new stuff (in the end it is cheap insurance against failure - through something going wrong with the gear).

Here is a list of what i have used;

1 x 600watt HPS light Kit $270

1 x small Fish tank Air Pump $10

1 x large Fish tank Air Stone $3

1 metre of air line for AirPump-Stone $0.30

1 x 150 Watt adjustable Fishttank Heater $27

1 x Medium-large Water Fountain Pump $43

1 x roll of 20mm Black Water Fountain - Garden Irrigation Hose $approx $5

1 x roll of 5mm Black Water Fountain - Garden Irrigation Hose $approx $5

4 x 20mm Elbow Fitting - suit Black Water Fountain - Garden Irrigation Hose $approx $5

3 x T Pieces 20mm Fitting - suit Black Water Fountain - Garden Irrigation Hose $approx $5

3 x T Pieces 5mm Fitting - suit Black Water Fountain - Garden Irrigation Hose $approx $5

2 x large Pots (no Holes in Bottom) or Buckets used as a set for each plant $6 each

1 x Large (65 Litre) Black Plastic - container with close fitting Lid $20

1 x Personal/Pedestal Household Fan $20

1 or more Fans suit fresh air induction & Exhaust air Fan & duction to suit above - cost vary a lot here (minmun cost approx $20) I have used a single High Perrformance 120mm computer fan.

1 each 24 Hour power point style timer switch for Light, Pump, Pedestal Fan, fresh air fan & exhaust fan - i use 4 timers altogether @ $6 each for low amperage models and $29 for Heavy duty model (light)

1 or 2 x power boards to run all of the above $5

Panda Film to line your grow area $7 per metre

Veg stage Nutrients to start $20 - 2 pack

Grow medium - I use Perlite with Coco Coir mixed in

some seeds of choice or clones/suttings/seedlings to grow

You will need a secure area & security of some description with good reliable power supply. I use $2 - $2.50 worth of power per day to run my grow room (We have PayAsYouGo power here in Tassie - well some of us do)

You won't get much change out of about $500 to setup - this is for a 3-5 Pot/Plant grow room

If you look for one of my earlier postings on this site you will find some photos of my setup & grow.

:thumbsup

I don't know if it has been mentioned before, but you can offset some of your growroom power consumption by installing through the house those compact fluoros. They are now as little as 2 or 3 bucks each. In my house, where little regard is taken for turning lights off, I noticed almost a $100 saving on each bill. Now I don't care if they are left on. One normal incandescant uses the same power as a house full of compacts. They have paid for themselves over and over for me.

I know it is different, dependent on where you live, but how much is everyone paying these days for a kWh ?

I already have CF's all round the place and have been using them ever since they were available here. The power use i was referring to was the power used just for the grow room (did not include the house power).

With the PAYG that we have there are actully 3 different rates throughout the day

#1 is from about 9am to 12Pm = the dearest rate - don't remember exactly what it is off hand though !

#2 Rate is about half of the first rate

#3 is approximately a third of the first rate.

So with a littel planning you can actually save more money than the old 2 rate system ( 1 rate for power & 1 for hotwater). We have saved ourselves atleast $10 per week by using the newer PAYG system.
