Best light timer

Recommended Posts

Heard a few stories about timers failing due to heavy startup loads with hps lamps and ballasts. I am getting ready to flip in the coming week and have been running lights 24/7. Got cheap bunnings timers for exhaust fan but don't think it will hold up for the 600watt hps lamp I'll be running. Any suggestions. I'll post a few pics and a few more details later if I get some responses. Cheers.

Most 10amp ones a shithouse as you've found out about. But there are a few hydroponic specific ones around that can handle the startup loads, though I haven't kept up to speed to what's on the market these days. If you can find a 15amp one it should go some ways of working for you. Otherwise, if you're up to it. Check out Bufo's old tutorial below as it could be the better/best option.

The points can fuse together on even the better dial type timers .

A digital timer with built in relay will give a softer startup ,,,no sudden surge of power.

I went through a few timers ,even the heavy duty ones would shit themselves but since using timers with a relay I've had no problems.

These points fusing can be a fire hazard? I don't even know what a relay is but I'll google it and find something with one. 15amp as mentioned above also.
