Seedlings in Clay Balls

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what you folks use when starting off seeds in the Clay balls in a Hydro setup. Last year i used rock wool and it went OK but the rock wool cubes seem to hold a lot of water, maybe too much for the delicate root system, i have read of people having issues with these cubes. I started the seeds in the wool then when they were about 2 inches high i picked a lot of the cube away and just inserted what was left in the clay balls, as i said it went OK but just wondering if there is a better way. I have seen the collar things but not sure if the actual seed is planted in the collar or do you pop the seeds in another medium and then transplant into the collars?

Anyway, any suggestions here would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Peat pucks / jiffy pots, or seed raising mix work well. People either stick the pucks in the hydroton balls and leave it or you can remove the medium and try to prop the seedling up in the balls. I've found it alot easier then fiddling with RW cubes

Thank you Mate, Is there likely to be any issue with the peat from the Jiffys going through the clay balls and possibly ending up in the reservoir? I am pretty new at Hydro, Second time i have tried.

As long as you don't stick it deep into the balls it should just stay close to the top and roots will travel through to find the water

I out my seeds in potting mix, once sprouted gently remove from soil, then make room in the clay balls and then gently place the balls back, and never had a issue

Just did this with one of my critical mass seedlings. One is staying in jiffy pot and the other is getting fogged. Gonna see which grows better before putting into DWC. For the love of science lolf93865062a9eb4848a5f925c055f1e5f.jpgcf59dee76925a6bdffda465320bcc581.jpg

Yeah mate my fridge dries these out pretty good. I usually use a seed raising mix but the last lot I tried didn't pop. These jiffy pots cost 25¢ and I have no issues. Whatever works best for you mate.
