Seedling problems

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the replies, the soil is a seed raising mix from Bunnings mixed in with a bit of perlite I usually water every second day maybe I give them to much water?? The light is 26 inches away maybe the light is to strong for the seedlings

Does light bleach cause them to grow really slowly?

Looks like too much tlc. I start mine off in a much smaller pot. With seed raising mix, nothing else! In seedling pots, very small. I use the weight of the pots to figure out when water is needed, sometimes they go for 4 days without a water. Also big pots slows down the above soil growth. The plant is establishing it's root system first then when the roots are well established the plant will show good growth above the soil line. Unfortunately your plant doesn't look to good, too much water can cause heaps of probs at such an early stage of development. If you have more seeds or can get some I would start again.

But get some small seedling pots first. You can get degradable seedling pots that break down in soil over time. Start off using them, then when the plant is looking healthy and the small round leaves start to turn yellow just plant them into bigger pots. And light bleach only burns the leaves, does not slow down growth.

brick has offered some great advice and it will work a treat. :)

another way ... but not a better way - just different ... is to soak the seed for 1 day in a shot glass (or something similar that is see-through) of filtered water.

get some jiffy pellets (the flat ones about 1 cm high) and place them on a saucer. just add water to the saucer over a few hours until they expand and no longer suck up any more water. they should be moist all the way through, but not dripping wet - be careful not to squeeze them, as the peat separates.

after the seed has soaked for a day (regardless of whether the seed casing has opened) I like to plant the seed about 5mm deep in to the bottom of the jiffy pellet, as I can make my own hole and get the depth and width I like - just rip the pantyhose around the bottom a bit to access the peat. on the top of these pellets, they have a hole already made ... but I don't think it offers enough control and have found that the seed can go too deep.

wait a couple of days for the seedlings to pop through the peat in the jiffy - during this time get a water sprayer and gentle spray the jiffy pellet on the edges (not on the top), when they start to get a bit light or dry - you will notice the difference in weight and it's a good way to see how much water is needed. even in areas with humidity of 50%, you will only need to do this two to three times a day. when you start to see a taproot come out of the bottom of the jiffy pellet ... it's time to transplant in to a small soil container - around 8-10cm diameter and about 10-15cm tall would be great. remove the pantyhouse completely and transplant with the crown above the soil level in the pot ie. the top of the jiffy pellet should be around 1cm higher than the soil level in the pot - this helps with overwatering.:)

if you are on a budget or just have heat issues, you can buy a cheapo desk lamp (i think bigw has them for around $15) and a 20w cool white led. the led light has an opaque plastic dome (to diffuse the light) ... get a drill and drill through both sides in the middle of the plastic bulb, put a screwdriver through both holes and pop off the plastic bulb - you now have a strong led light that will run cool and provide good light for your seedlings, at least until the first leaves (cotyledon) turn yellow and even a bit beyond that time. you can place the led light (with the plastic dome removed) about 10-15 cms initially for a new sprout to a little lower for bigger seedlings.

not everyone's cup of tea, but for under $40 you get a reliable seedling germination and light.:)

hope it helps

ps: most of the germination info is from Kalyx - the living organic soil guru. the led light info comes from blynx and all his patient testing at:

The reason I think most ppl have problems with germination is they touch the seed once it’s cracked

Your hands have almost as many germs as your mouth and u touch your baby seedlings

Stick in some seed raising mix that is pre watered, I prefer to let it soak up from the bottom for better uniformity throughout pot

Put your seed in , don’t let it get to cold

In no time you’ll have some nice healthy little plants

I put these in about 3/4 weeks ago and forgot about them , they’ve been outside since a week oldpost-61362-151990170935_thumb.jpg

It’s not rocket science, u don’t need humidity readings or any other that other crap

If I were to replace the 300 watt led to a 50 watt led that is a white light would that make a difference while it's still young? They are still growing so they might have some life in them still haha..

Give it a try, nothing to lose at this stage. Be patient though as when you change something it can take a bit of time to see a result. Good luck!
