Here's a bit of advice, horticulturally speaking

Plant stems are made up of differing cells, the inner woodier cells give the plant the strength to stay upright, but give the plant very little to nil nutrient value

Around the outside of the woody centre are cells called phloem cells, these cells are what transport the nutrients to where they are needed.

Trees have another layer that protects these cells, the bark. When a tree is ringbarked, the nutrient route is broken and the tree dies.

I have had incidences where the main stem has split down thru the middle, but because the phloem has still been connected the buds continue to grow.

Canna doesn't have a hard protective bark as such and the phloem is exposed on the outside of the branch, making it easy to damage

Being that it's only the one branch affected, I'd suggest that the phloem layer of that stem has been damaged. If it was a root issue or bugs attacking the roots the whole plant would be affected and not just one single stem.

Well that'd be my suggestion anyway

awsome info merlin.. 2 plants affected both the stems are lower ones and they did get covered by soil obviously overtime however that has been rectified..could that possibly be a contributing factor..

Could the stems have grafted to the ground and then when you "rectified" it's caused an issue? Just spitballin
