Medical marijuana debate continues to stir in wake of man's non-conviction in Wagga  Local Court

Labor has implored the state government to legalise medicinal marijuana following a landmark ruling in Wagga Local Court.

The call comes after a magistrate handed down a bold non-conviction to a man caught growing 12 cannabis plants for his terminally ill father.

Labor Riverina candidate Tim Kurylowicz said the Wagga magistrate had made the right choice and the ball was in the government’s court.

“The magistrate chose not to punish someone for helping a dying man and good on him,” he said.

“We need the government to change the law rather than relying on the good conscious of our judges to protect people.”

Mr Kurylowicz said medical cannabis charges were tying up courts with cases that didn’t need to be there.

“The government might support it in principle but not in legislation – which is where it counts,” he said.

“We’re also missing out on the potential benefit of a whole new industry.”

State MP Daryl Maguire said support continued to grow for the use of medical cannabis, with trials being conducted and growing licences issued.

“In NSW we’ve moved ahead of everyone to work with the federal government and bring about medical cannabis use for those that are terminally ill,” he said

.

“People might be concerned that it’s not fast enough but it is moving.

“The magistrate had a tough job to do and showed real compassion.”

Former Junee sergeant David McCann, who retired in 2010, said the current position surrounding medical cannabis put police in a difficult position.

“The whole question about medical marijuana is a hot topic but police have to uphold the law,” he said.

“Since it is illegal and you can be convicted it is our job to enforce it.”

While Mr McCann is neither against or in support of the decriminalisation of medical marijuana, he said there was no point advocating for change until the state government and medical authorities made a final decision.

“There are good, decent people who claim it does help loved ones who are suffering,” he said.

“It’s no good advocating in the Riverina because it could mean we are seen as a softer place to be for those who grow cannabis for illegal reasons.

“We could find our drug problem getting even worse.”

the thing is cannabis is going to be out there on the black market anyways, why not tax it. are people really that stupid. it should of been legalized a long time ago. and yes i mean for recreational usage.

Fuck that, TAX =theft, it would end up like ciggie's and grog, a price rise every 6 months, and priced out of the reach of those that need it most

Bottle of JD $45-50, 6 fucking 1/2 strength cans of bourbon $20+, a pack of dodgy tasting smokes(overseas shit) name your price $22-50

Cannabis TAX FREE and should stay that way

I'd rather me mates make a quid and put it to good use (surviving the socialist nightmare) than giving our government overlords more $

only to take their misses and kids on FIRST CLASS holidays at our expense, or give it away to stnuc overseas,

have fun working to 70 while these stnuc are living it up with your stolen $

lol

in Denver US , the tax revenue has exceeded expectations & they have started to out weigh alcohol tax revenue

no other place in the US are receiving more tax from canna than alcohol , drink driving is down , traffic accidents

are down violent crimes are down , i have no probs with taxing & putting that money to good use , unfortunately

it's the Gov of the day that will determine " good use " of funds , much rather have tax rev than not , would rather

wage tax reductions than not taxing canna that way i get to choose what i buy & how much tax i put into the system

though purchases & not though my labor , of cause there needs to be some wage taxes or we could all go into saving

mode & not be able to fund the many things funded by our taxes , PBS , disability pensions  , roads , schools ,

medical buildings , disaster / farmer relief ect

it needs to be no diff than buying fruit & veg at the supper market , taxed accordingly but being sold for not much

diff than kg tomato/vegge prices , it must be affordable for all , @ $140 per week for the 20 or so on the oz canna

program is ridiculous

just my opinion & def not the only way

make it legal & we can actually work that all out

States are addicted to cannabis tax revenues. According to a new report from New Frontier Data,

states with legalized marijuana are on track to generate approximately $655 million in state taxes

on retail sales in 2017. Within that tax figure, $559 million will come just from cannabis taxes,

much more than from alcohol taxes.

The report also forecasts that tax revenues in states with legalized marijuana will reach $1.8 billion,

of which $1.4 billion will be from cannabis specific taxes. This money isn't easily replaceable if the

Department of Justice reviews its current approach to marijuana. Plus, the Trump administration

is calling for deep cuts in many programs with its proposed budget and this puts further pressure

on state governors to continue providing services its residents have come to expect.

“In an era of dwindling state resources, when we are looking to smaller governments, and an administration

at the federal level that is looking to end funding to states in numerous ways, the discovered revenue

from regulated legal cannabis markets can be a lifesaver to local law enforcement, substance abuse

counseling and other social services,” said Leslie Bocskor of Electrum Partners. According to Bocskor,

states are fighting the Justice Department's new war on drugs for purely fiscal reasons because the

overall economic impact has been much higher than anyone expected.

Income tax is a bit like part time slavery, and should be abolished, capital gains tax should be abolished, in fact all but TWO tax's should go, import and export should be the only ones

Nobody needs a fruit and vegetable tax

Only need to shrink the gov by about 98%, and no pension till everyone else gets one

U only live once, on your feet is better then in somebody's lap,

Time will tell i suppose, I vote no more TAX's and piss of the ones we already have,   lol

billions of $$$$ in rec/medical cannabis, no socialist Gov left or right is going to look at that and not try and control the $$$$$, and get the cream of the top as usual

the sick are just another commodity that needs to be exploited,

i hear ya

gov needs to be a hole new thing

the red Vs blue team mentality has not & does not serve us well

team red comes up with a great idea & team blue has to shut it down regardless of the actual idea

our football teams gotta win

i've heard someone say , if we had entrusted the gov to control the advancement of mobile phone tech

we'd all be still walking round with big brick phones , mainly because of the team mentality of someone has to win

now that's cool in sport & i also think it's cool for kids to learn winning & loosing & not just we're all "winners today"

in all most all cases they hinder progress rather than advance it , they produce nothing but yet to win votes

they'll give everyone $250 , now what are they giving us , considering they produce nothing , they're a collection agency

if they give you something they are taking from somewhere else , someone else is missing out

but i do think we need to give back to services a community will need , that most likely we'll need , how that give back works , who knows

but i'm happy to give back as long as it's used wisely & not pissed up against the wall

gov pay rates are def over the top for the quality of person filling those positions but look at the large corporate's

& the dollars they pay for the top of the tree CEO's or whatever the position is

so the question is to get the best people to run the country , how much incentive does there need to be

& how do you set up a gov , (maybe needs a better term than the word government) , to serve to the

best of a systems ability & maybe not a person's ability

i'm no expert just talking tish really

hoping there's a better way

I think trying to break use into medical and “recreational” is old fashioned.

Cannabis should just be free to be put to any adult use full stop.

All cannabis use is for the purposes of well-being. All of it. No one would use it if it wasn't helping them in some way.

The enemy is the puritanical demonisation that has made so that the medical industrial complex recognises it's not okay for people to feel bad; but then when it tries to make them feel good it somehow has something against them feeling TOO good.
