How long do seeds stay good for?

Recommended Posts

5+ year old (bag) seeds, stored in the chest freezer.

Very low germ ratio though.b7932bb591546867111a60c3d12c3d53.jpg

Average 1 out of 7.

wouldn't be keeping seeds in a freezer , might be a reason for low germ rates

just need to keep seeds dry & cool

remember all kind of seed is store in soil outdoors waiting for the right conditions to germ

Nice. So did you top them quite early? I need to do mine soon. Probably should have done it by now but was worried it was too early to.

general rule of thumb

top at the 5th node to make 2 tops & again at the 4th node of those 2 tops to make 4 tops

both those times should have you topping at a parallel node point , which means the 2 branch sites

either side of the topping will compete to be the top making 2 tops

this will turn your plant from a xmas tree shape to a wine glass shape

I was thinking the same last night when I read it, itchy. But apparently after Googling the subject last night some yanks seem to think -15C is the optimum temp.

I'm not sure how they come about to this theory, and I doubt it's a practice I'll be taking up anytime soon.

I'll keep mine in the the 3-5c range still, like was suggested to me by a oldtimer some years back.

i think it's around 140f in composting that will kill seeds

meaning if they were at 100f for a period of time they would still germinate afterwards

in a controlled environment & lots of testing , you can freeze seeds for sure

there's billions of dollars spent to make sure of that

not sure it be the same as our home environments

i would like to know how they remove them from the freezer to be germinated ?

would they slowly raise temps to bring a seed out of a frozen state ?

pretty cool what they can do , look at malted seeds , they can germinate a

seed & stop the germination process to trap enzymes for beer making

& do it exactly the same every time , so a VB can is always a VB can

regardless where the seed was harvested
