poo is much better when out the backside of a worm 

 

poo can attract some pests to the area which might not be a prob 

but pests attract pests , castings don't really attract fly's like most other poo's 

 

It's widely known that earthworm castings (droppings) are a great fertilizer (especially for container plants)

and can suppress soil diseases. Now, research from Germany has found that not only do earthworm castings

prevent soilborne diseases, they actually help repel above ground insects as well.

 

Researchers found that plants with worm castings added to their growing medium had higher nitrogen content

in their leaves than control plants, but fewer aphids feeding on the leaves. They speculated that the earthworm

castings altered the plant sap chemistry, making it less appealing to the aphids.

Does this sound alright for the 100L pots ? (moving up from the 50L pots they are in):

 

1. 20L worm castings.

2. 25L potting mix.

3. Balance made up of perlite, 5-10L.

4. top dress with barley straw collected from chook pens.

sounds ok but i'd double your air to 20lts

 

chook piss can be , but not always , a lill full on ,

you'll just have to keep an eye on things when you water though the mulch layer

not to much piss is leaching from the straw 

 

if worried can always mix 50/50 with fresh straw & water slowly

I'll add more perlite.  the pots are actually around 110L, so a bit of room.

 

the straw does have a lot of chook shit in it when I clean the pens, so I will use new straw and maybe a little of the used stuff mixed in to it.

110lt is the type of size that makes life easier to keep soil life all good

 

it's a good resource , chook pen straw , but can be hot 

you could bokashi compost it first maybe then work from there

Hey Dallas, I reckon Tunkers might want to trade the mini for that fridge .

Was a good beer fridge, served us well for 20+ years keeping the beer cold but sadly it died and now is just a wind break for the sal's.
