GREENERY IMPROVES THE SCENERY

Recommended Posts

i'm currently growing in sip's , uses 2/3 less water but the plant is never out of water , impossible to over water

but if you tried to keep a soil that moist with watering from above , the plant would die , root rot

but watering from the bottom like an aquifer under a tree keeps it all good , then add the pro & prebiotics

& you have a nutrient dense final product to consume , honestly i think this is next level organics

& incredibly simple , kids could be taught this , fortnightly top dresses , weekly spray & a weekly steeped tea

that's it , no other requirement apart from whatever IPM you use but that's not a big prob either when plants

are this healthy

you got the perfect attitude to be a no till farmer :)

whats your preferred SIP design itchy?

as far as brought ones go

i think the earthbox is better cos of the wicking positions

only 2 & in each corner of the box on one side ,

makes it easy to check wicking points if you have a drying out prob

also easier to repack the wick points with a plant growing in the box

the greensmart pot has it's wicking points down the middle of the box

it's good cos there are 6 or 8 wick points , so if you lose one or 2 points

shouldn't be to much of a prob

the downside you really have no way of checking or repacking points with a plant growing in there box

not that you loose the wicking points if you setup properly but you could if you

powered water in the box at a rapped rate , might wash them out

i have both & if setup right you should be laughing as far as wicking points go

the plastic shower cap on the greensmart pot is not quite as good as the earthbox ,

the earthbox cap has elastic all way round it , the greensmart pot have it only

in the corners of the cap , blows up in the wind

it sounds trivial but the cap is a big part of the way the system works , condensation builds

up on the underside of the cap & rains back down over the media keeping it moist along

with moisture from wicks

now this is important too , in an earthbox they show how to mound the soil under the cap

the mound sits higher than the edge of the box , this is done for when it rains , it will force

the rain water off the sides of the box & stop it from top watering , which is not good for sip growing

there's a bunch of diy vids on sip making , the main thing i would think about if DIY'ing

how high will it wick , my understanding you want a soil height between 8 & 11 inches

keep in mind it's hard to buy earthboxes in oz , i have 4 & got them second hand here

from the guy how was importing them , he still has the oz earthbox website up but no boxes

i wouldn't say impossible to lift by yourself ,

you'd want to empty them first by tipping the box

towards the drain hole

from memory they hold around 40lts of soil & that soil will be wet

so not lite if you want to quickly lift them

they also need to sit pretty level which makes them a bit more permanent

you can move them , the eathbox has built in wheels to make that easier

greensmart pot don't have wheels

that's cool man keep us updated on your DIY sip's

I was looking at those self watering pots in bunnings. Any chance they could be adapted? They seem to work the same way with wick points that the soil goes down into. I heard they are no good for cannabis but who knows. I've always liked the idea of watering from top to wash out any build up of salts and crap but I guess these sip things work different and don't need flushing

hey inthewoods

no flushing with organics , you use plain water prob 50-60% of the time

& for some 100% water only in a well run no till system

sips takes watering plants out of your hands & gives the plant control over water/food when " it " wants it

my job is to make a soilless media , top the water rez off each day with water & EM-1 , foliar spray EM once a week , make a non bubbled EM/kashi tea once a week

& top dress 1 thing fortnightly & another monthly , the only other thing is top dress with dolomite at bud set & at soil mixing , that's it from start to finish

if you were to try & flush , aka water through the top of a sip , you would instantly over water the plant

you also are able to grow a bigger plant for the size of container

i believe Bogan has one of those self watering pots he was looking at adapting / playing with at some point

it def  looks poss to adapt in  some way

i have 3 sips indoor now , & they are very impressive imho
