Recommended Posts

if your replacing a bulb every grow then send them to me I will use them twice more and show you why ypur wasting money.
Hey Ferengi, I picked up a couple of used 400w's and a 600w you can have, they are black enough to have been used for about ten grows though, they are not very bright but still work. ::(: Got them with a really good score at the tip shop, I picked up four reflectors, three HPS ballasts (2 x 400w and a 600w), five globes (2 x 400w Son-T's look new in unopened packs) and a digital timer for $80 and it all works. :P :(

The average HPS (high pressure sodium) bulb last about 20,000 hours and the average crop hours of light is worked out as follows.

Vegitation average = 28 days (4wks) to 42 days (6wks) @ 18hrs per day

= 504hrs to 756hrs = av. 630hrs

Flowering average = 42days (6wks) to 70days (10wks) @ 12hrs per day

= 504hrs to 840hrs = av. 672hrs

These calculations would indicate the average amount of hours light a crop uses is between 1008hrs & 1596hrs an average of 1302hrs

20,000hrs divide by 1302hrs = 15.36 say 15 crops

Use this formula to calculate the amount of crops per bulb Always know how many hours the bulb will last (by asking at the purchase point) and then divide it by 1302 this gives you amount of crops. eg.

10,000hrs divide by 1302 = 7.68 say 7 crops

I dont think there are many bulbs on the market that last less than 10,000hrs. Dont be fooled into beleiving that bulbs need changing every 1to5 crops. Its a ploy used by the shops for u 2 buy more. A myth that has developed over time by neglecting the mathematical truth.
