How much direct sunlight?

Recommended Posts

Hi again!!

Yep, another newbie question from T!CTAC...

Obviously outdoor needs sunlight but how much needs to be DIRECT? I would imagine as much as possible, but what if you can only get say, from 9am til 4pm or maybe even 5pm? How much of a difference will that potentially make? I have a particular spot put aside for as much direct light as I can get but wifey is concerned about when we have people over (valid concern obviously).

All thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Cheers, All :-)

9am - 4pm is 7 hours of direct sunlight, thats not bad. You stated the obvious yourself, the more light the better, but if you need to hide things, they will live.

You can get a decent yield with only 5 hrs Direct sunlight, but, you will yield 3 times as much if they get 10 hrs ;)

During this time of year though, you sorta want all the light you can get, as the UV rays are not as strong as the growing season (sept-may), day lengths are short and its cold over night, which all leads to a smaller harvest.

Cheers mate. 9 til 4 is probably what I'll end up with so I'm happy with that.

I'm not farming yet...waiting for Sept to get here. Just asking lots of questions beforehand so I don't muck it all up ;-)

What you also need to look at is the angle of the sun changing with the seasons changing how much direct light they get.  I always looked for spots getting good light in Spring and Autumn, figuring that the more they get during early growth and flowering the better, and if that sacrifices a bit during mid Summer it's not really a bad thing.  If that's the wrong approach I hope someone will tell me before I put any more effort into setting up this years guerilla plot.

A northern aspect is best.

Thanks mate. I'd actually considered that but it's nice to see someone else thinking the same :-)
