Hey guys, you're spot on with comment on brunnings  mixes, even top of line Searles Premium has a lot of sticks and bark also time release stuff which i

hear is not what we want. Iv'e been mixing in product called Rocky Point "active 8" soil imp, blood meal, blood & bone, dynamic lifter, chook poop, cow manure

Do you think this is overkill even though make this a good month before potting up. Only thing is the bloody fungus gnats seem to love it. Can these critters

actually stunt growth of autos, don't know whether it's them or the mix, any ideas?

yes 100%

fungus gnats seem to love it.

gnats prob came in the bags of stuff you brought , bunnings stores product outdoors , not a lot you can do

& if you make a mix & leave outdoors wrapped in a tarp with all the above amendments gnats will have a field day

depending on soil mix quantity , store the mix in , plastic rubbish cans , you can pick up second hand 44gal food grade drum with a

ring seal thingy that i use , ain't no bugs gettin in there once the lids on

Thanks guys, even wrap 30ltre buckets after made the mix with plastic gladrap and seal with tape. Mth latter when opened, these little winged midgets

(apoligies to midgets out there),are still alive & kicken. I reckon they'd be up there with cockies in surviving atomic bomb, so do you know if they can stunt

autos or how much damage they can do?

in soil there prob not as bad as other mediums

fungus gnats like to eat fungus , sometimes you

have fungus attached to roots & they will have a chew

this is not guaranteed though , with lots of other food

sources in the mix , you would rather them not be there

few options , one way to help control gnats is with nemassist nematodes $44

Fungus gnats (Sciarid Fly) are well recognised as a serious pest to professional plant propagators, hydroponic and greenhouse growers.

Use Nemassist® nematodes to control the larvae in cryptic habits. Beneficial nematodes follow the Carbon Dioxide gradient produced by

the larvae and seek them out where chemicals are unable to make effective contact.

The nematode is naturally occurring and mass reared.

We recommend Steinernema feltiae as the most effective treatment available. Chemicals can stunt plant growth and harden plant tissue.

Particularly the cells in growing tips.

These natural predators won’t harm people, pets, plants or beneficial insects.

Apply at a rate of 15 Million nematodes per 30 m2 as a curative or 15 Million nematodes per 60 m2 as a preventative.

Preventatively apply once a month. For smaller areas or if using for a heavy infestation, apply a third of the pack at a time, 7-10 days

apart to ensure no product is wasted.

Soil temperature should be above 12C at the time of application for nematodes to be active.

Apply by watering can, pump sprayer or knap sack after removing any fine filters. (< 0.5 mm). They can also be applied with some

brands of hose end sprayers .

Store unused product in a household refrigerator for up to 3-4 weeks after arrival.

if the bugs are there , putting them in a can not going to stop them , if you sprayed the mix down with nematodes B4 putting in a can

might be good thing , email the good bug people & ask can they be used on a soil mix complete with gnats that is to be stored for a bit

doesn't have to be a rubbish can , food grade if ya can but a good lid is the important bit , lots of drums on ebay cheap , just check

what was in them B4 you buy & if they clean them out B4 selling them

yes you can buy nematodes online from the good bug shop http://goodbugshop.com.au/

make sure you read how to use then store if not using all at once , also check the shelf life , it's not long from memory
