I would not recommend using a cheap ventilation fan, as this is a critical part of growing indoors, and if it fails, or doesn't do the job, you could end up with dead plants, or possibly a lot worse.

Fans used for bathroom exhausts are usually not rated for continuous use, which is what you need to do when growing indoors to keep the temps down and the air fresh. As a consequence they can wear out when run continously, or even more dangerously, they can burn out and start fires.

I know many peeps use them, but dammit, I would never, ever recommend a cheap fan. They're not only a potential hazard, but they just don't suck through the air that you should be getting from a fan that big. For a hundred bucks or so you can get a continuous rated, high volume co-axial fan from a hydro shop, and you'll never have to buy another one for that growing space unless you want more room.

btw, caps is generally thought of as shouting in forums. <_<

I use the cheap exhaust fans. 20 bux or les form bunnings. I shouldn't but. Run the fan 24/7 lights on or off. The pedestal fan I use only while lights are on, but that's only because I have no choice. No rom for it when the lights are off.

When I say I shouldn't use the cheap fans, I mean I really shouldn't. I just burnt the second one out the other day. At 20 dollars a throw, burning two out in as many eyars is no big deal. And if one were to be committed to putting a new one in say every harvest, there would never be a problem. But I nearlybyrnt the cupboard up last time.

I could smell a "hot" smell, plastic maybe, but couldn't track it down. I only figured it out, when the fan literally fell from the cupboard ceilinng into the grow, after melting the bushing housing and all that surrounded it, the whole awful melted burnt plastic sticky mess landed in a damp spot. If it had stayed where it was, and continued to heat, it would have broke into flames without doubt.

The more exensive ones aren't bushed, but have bearings and are much safer.

If you use the cheap ones, change them religously, until you can afford to buy a good one. I know I will now. Periodically we hear of houses burning down, and even heard of some poor bloke dieing from his grow cupboard catching fire. The exhaust fan really is a weak link.

cheers

i got 3 weeks out of a cheap GAF fan from Bunnings , it died so i replaced with a 2nd fan under warranty and that lasted 6 days , after that i bought a 150mm axial fan for $100, its fine for the 600 watt light , but i will need a centrifugal fan when i wanna use the carbon scrubber as well.

get the best fan that you cant afford *grin* + a rotating fan

Ventilation is a very improtant part of your grow room as others have stated, if you get a burnt out fan you may be lucky and not start a fire but it coul dbe just enough time before you notice that you loose half your buds to mould,

DON"T cheap out on exhaust fans , if you are really strapped for cash make a post requesting and spare fans in the clasifieds section you would be suprised the extra crap some people have lieing around and simple hang onto it cause they don't get anyone asking for it, alternativly the guy at the link bellow always has hepas of seccond hand hydro gear , bu t as soon as you can you really should replace it
