STEERING WHEEL SHOCKER

A MAN caught driving in Kalgoorlie-Boulder without a steering wheel has prompted a strong police warning to would-be dangeous drivers.

The recent incident is one of many where drivers have been charged for displaying foolish behaviour on the road and putting lives at risk.

Daniel Peter Edmonds, 27, of Boulder, was charged with dangerous driving, driving without a liscence and driving an unroadworthy vehicle after police caught him in a car which had no steering wheel, no windscreen and no tail light.

The steering wheel had fallen of and Edmonds had clamped a multi grips to the steering column to replace it.

He was fined more then $1000 and had his lecense suspended after being found guilty in the Kalgoorlie Magistrate's Court earlier this month.

Another man was charged after police pulled him over for towing a wrecked car upside down, dragging it along the road.

In a third incident, a man was caught towing a tree stump along the road behind his vehicle. Kalgoorlie Police traffic officer-in-charge Acting Sgt Al McKay said the foolish behaviour of some motorists put the general public at risk.

"it is unsafe. They have no control of the vehicle," he sai.

"it is dangerous in itself what they are doing."

He said towing objects without a trailer took gouges out of the road which could be especially dangerous for motorcycle riders if they hit a pothole.

"people do not stop and think about the consequences of what they are doing," Sgt McKay said.

"They are not taking any thought for anyone else on the road."

He said about three cars a day were stopped in Kalgoorlie-Boulder that did not comply with vehicle standards.

"We probably get a few more here because vehicles from out of the lands come in," sgt McKay said.

He said any vehicle that was not roadworthy would be issued with a work order and drivers could be charged with dangerous and reckless driving offences if the situation was serious.
