Growing medium for a newby

Recommended Posts

Hi all first time poster long time lurker.

I'm about to start my first grow in a couple of wks. I'll be growing 2 autos under 4 x 55w T5 fluros. For my growing medium I've mixed up yates potting mix with dynanic lifter and around 20-30% perlite. I've put it into a fairly large pot with good size drain holes but the mixture seems to be holding onto too much water. I did give it a good soaking but it hasn't drained like I thought it should. Is this normal or should I bin the Yates stuff and start again? Thanks in advance!

Personally i'm not into using soil mixes indoor.. I only use Coco..  You always want good drainage so no that doesn't sound normal. Never want her roots sitting in slush.

You could try and fix the soil drainage with Coco Coir or even sand but my best advice would be to go with pure Coco all the way.

I do some outdoor growing but i premix my own from a landscape garden supplies.   Equal parts  Chicken manure soil mix + Cow manure soil mix  + mushroom soil mix + sand for drainage .. That's a  recipe i got from a large commercial grower way back in the 90's and it never fails.
