Newly diagnosed Parkinson's sufferer - Best approach.

benjicon

Question

Hi Guys and Gals,

My names Ben, I am new to the forums, my step father (living in NSW) was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, he also suffers from heart problems, (triple bypass and loads of stents) the medications the doctors have been testing him on cause his heart beat to go out of rhythm so its been very cautious and slow going.

I live in Vancouver Canada, weed here in all shapes and forms is legal, I live next door to a dispensary and can get Rick Simpson Oil, Tinctures, Capsules, Shatters, any strain, you name it, its there and its very affordable. My wife is in remission from Lupus and she vapes buds and finds it helps a lot as a preventative measure from relapses. Sadly I have been reading that Aus's laws haven't changed much and the government is making sure big Pharma gets the lions share of the profits.  I'm sure my frustration is exactly the same as many other chronic illness sufferers back home, or people with a family member who suffers with a chronic Illness and feel helpless.

I had a phone conversation with my mum back home a week ago and she said because of my step dads heart complications they were considering Medical Marijuana as it seemed like the most natural approach. This was a funny conversation for me because my mum is so straight laced and me and my brothers and sisters have all been through long partying phases in our lives so talking about drugs with my mum was novelty.

Anyway enough of my boring background.   I know there are strict rules about what we are and aren't allowed to post here. But I'd like to hear from anyone that in a similar situation or has a good understanding of the most effective way to approach the situation, I personally feel like growing it would be the safest way for my mum and step dad to get hold of suitable high quality CBD, they have fantastically green thumbs, but then my concern would be how do we make sure we have the right strain seeds ?  Are seeds Illegal in Australia ?  My folks live on the south coast of NSW so I''d be very interested to hear any regional experience or suggestions.  I don't really know what else to ask on the open forum but I am sure anyone who reads my post will understand my situation.

If anyone has any information that might help or any stories that they want to share please do, or PM me. ;)

Thanks for your time.

Ben.

Hey Ben,

For a starter, hats off to you for looking at alternatives. I personally have found canna to be very helpful for medicinal purposes despite many of my dr's poo pooing the idea, primarily the specialists, and primarily on the grounds of it being illegal and a 'non approved' drug :nutzo: .

As for "...how do we make sure we have the right strain?..." This will take some investigation and a bit of 'trial and error' as what may work for one individual may have little benefit for another. Also due to your step father's heart condition this may throw up more variables that will also need to be managed. For example smoking may not be a 'desirable' option but this may not be of concern as edibles or oils could be an option. So it really is a case of finding the best option for each individual.

Are seeds Illegal in Australia ? As you say "...laws haven't changed much and the government is making sure big Pharma gets the lions share of the profits..." but here are some links that may clarify the 'official' line https://www.odc.gov.au/importers-exporters-travellers AND https://www.odc.gov.au/acquiring-seeds-and-nursery-stock . As I say these are the 'official line' but where there is a will there is always a way, just not officially ;)

Edit: Here's another link regarding biosecurity https://bicon.agriculture.gov.au/BiconWeb4.0/ImportConditions/Search?SearchTabIndex=0&CaseSearchText=cannabis+&SearchExecutionType=Search&ShowAdvancedCaseSearchOptions=False&ImportDestinationAustralia=true&ImportDestinationAustralia=false&ImportDestinationCocosIslands=false&ImportDestinationChristmasIsland=false&CaseEffectiveAsAtDate=04%2FJan%2F2017&ScientificNameFiltertext=&ScientificNameRank=All&CheckedAvailableScientificNameId=&CheckedSelectedScientificNameId=&SelectedScientificNameIdsString=&TarrifCodePart1=&TarrifCodePart2=&TarrifCodePart3=&TarrifCodePart4=&ShowAdvancedTariffSearchOptions=False&TariffSearchEffectiveAsAtDate=04%2FJan%2F2017

As for the rules here, the moderators are pretty good. So long as you don't ask for supply and are respectful of other members, most questions are OK. Usually you'll get told if you are walking too close to the line and if you continue then they will boot you off. If you are unsure you too can PM members or Mods for clarification.

Best of luck with it all and if you have questions then please do ask, you have lots of people here with lots of knowledge in everything canna from growing to harvest to oils and hashes, and of course medicinal. So ask.

Probably worth chucking in that canna can cause changes to blood pressure, generally downwards but I have heard of cases where it goes up, possibly in cases where anxiety or paranoia is brought on.  So it might be worth taking a cautious approach if there are cardio issues involved.

I would also advise doing a google search on parkinsons and canna to see if there are any strains or spectrums of canna that have been known to be more effective.  Might at least give a starting point before going down the trial and error path.
