For me bud rot comes across as a dirty musty smell.

 

There have been times i have picked up the rot smell just buy opening the grow area that was with a bad case.

Been there, done that.  It's become part of a 2 part process for me during flower, every time I'd open the tent I'd sniff for that smell, and then look for that tell tale blackish coloured dying leaf poking out of a bud, and have caught it early on a few times by doing so.

the mouldy bud i've smoked & had no idea why the flower just almost 

fell off the stem
