How early can you determine sex

Recommended Posts

Both October germinated are in the ground now.

Still no sign of male parts so far.

However, and this happens every year, the next day after transplant they are covered in little grasshoppers

Don't see a grasshopper on anything else all year, but when I plant weed they come from everywhere.

Can anyone help me out regarding the grasshopper issue. I'm currently killing two a day

grasshoppers dont like the smell and taste of garlic. it wont kill them but they wont be so keen on the plants you spray.

here's a link to how to make a garlic spray. the recipe is at the bottom of the page.

might also give your plant some exotic terpenes  :egyptdance:

Grasshoppers of 3 different sizes are a monumental outdoor pain in my arse where I grow, and left untreated they can do massive damage very fast.  I stick to a simple regime of spraying Eco Neem about every 3 weeks up until 5 weeks or so from harvest time, doesn't completely stop the little fuckers, but they never seem to have more than a tiny nibble before they get the message.

There's other more natural methods, and it would probably be more effective if alternated with other things, but does the job well enough for me.

As for preflowers Harry, some plants just don't like to show them, but most do from about the 5th node up on the join just behind the stipule (or whatever it's called).  They're usually smaller than normal flowers and quite often aren't visible without a magnifying glass or loupe.  If they don't show up under magnification, do as Jester suggested with the cuttings in the dark, I haven't tried it but the method was suggested by a reputable and knowledgeable source.
