How much can I trim and prune a plant?

As the title asks how much can I get away without shocking the plant too much?

 

Because I'm working in such a small space for my grow and using the CFL's, the light penetration just isn't there so 3/4 of the plant gets stuff all anyway and produces pathetic popcorn.

 

So if i trim it and just let it concentrate it's power on the main cola's it should be better yeah? cause the plant isn't using it's resources to maintain sun leaves and small buds? sorta like that mainlining technique?

SOG growers often trim the bottom 3rd of the plants to concentrate light to the main cola's

 I'd trim roughly the bottom 1/4 of the plant growing indoors. Then again I've only used 2 x 125 CFL's for additional/side lighting with 1 x 600 HPS so I'm no expert. :-( Worked every time for me though :-). One thing I can say: super crop, it works!
