Female Seeds,

Hi All, just wondering , how long would you expect a female seed to be good for ??

Ive had a fea put away, in the air tight vile , in a jar in the cupboard for 18 months,  very dry & no sun , but they crack ok in a shot glass, then into a good quality seed raising mix, kept at a constant 25 C, but im only getting a 30% germ!!..........Ive even had 2 seeds from the same strain, & batch go in at the same time , up pops 1 in a few days the other no show

When you dig em up you can see the tap root has started to grow then just stop, ive tried various strains with the same result

It looks like the nights have got to cold & killed the seed, except there on a electric doggy blanket, over night, & i monitor the temp, got me beat, why crack & not go on with the job,  only watered with room temp rain water, & the room is at a constant 25-28 C.

 

Any ideas any one ??

seed raising concrete mix = sandy woody crap , i've just had fun with Debco seed raising mix = never again  

planting seeds to deep 

 

shit mix + seed to deep = seed germs but can't push though the " Concrete " mix 

 

just an opinion

best place to store seeds is in the door of the fridge 100% germ rate here

Thx guys , but seeds planted very shallow,  & as for  fridge  yeah  possible option!!

I did read an article on seed keeping & a freezer was a no no, after 6 months it breaks down the  celulose in the seed & kills it , but never made comment about fridge

The world keeps it's seed selection in an underground freezer at - 18c.

It is not the freezer that kills seeds, it is how they are stored there

Why is it I am comfortable talking about old things is it maybe I'm old....NAH.
 
As your seeds age the outer shell dries out first and hardens ...  when placed in water only parts of the shell are still water permeable so not all of the shell is soft enough for the seedling to push through.
It will push through the crack where the two sides meet but then run out of energy to split the case for it to continue germinating.
 
What you need to do (or can do) is to Scarify or rough up the outer layer so that the water can get in to all the seed.

Knarfman, i think your spot on, nice work,  that would explain why some that did germ , still had the seed husk on,  i had to get twezers & carefully remove them

I can rember using a nail file on larger hard seeds like  Boab  to help germ, ill give it ago, thx

 

& yes train Wreck , your right, i just rembered seeing the vault on tell a while back, well see , as ive a mate who put 6 seeds in the frezzer 8 months ago, & hes about to try, be interesting, would you expect a longer germ period??
