Isopropyl Alcohol

Peter Hicks

Question

Hello Cultured Community,

I have posted this Topic as I need clarification on what is the correct type of Solvent people use to make RSO/ Cannabis Oil. I am 33 and suffer chronic pain... enough said...I have been studying this for quite a while. I currently use coconut oil and find it very good. My question relates to what type of  isopropyl alcohol and where to get it. The Yanks tend to us EverClear Grain Alcohol or something similar, I have found other similar aussie products, but they are too expensive especially when you need bit. Isopropyl Alcohol is all over ebay but its sold as being 'denatured' Alcohol meaning not for human consumption. Can this still be used for making safe medical RSO?

I have a reflux still and I am making my own moonshine with the hope after a few triple distillation process I can achieve my goal.

Any input on this topic would be graciously accepted.

Hey Peter,

'denatured' alcohol is made to stop people from drinking the stuff. Drinking it (and some other activities lol ) will send you blind. When making oil with iso you evaporate ALL of the iso off once the active ingredient has been extracted from the vegetable matter. The iso is merely the extraction solvent.

As for "where to get it?", iso is used in the electronics industry for the cleaning of circuit boards prior to soldering. You can purchase iso from the chemist but it is bloody expensive way to buy it. But I get a 4ltr bottle from a local electronics wholesaler for around $50. Now I say wholesaler, that is not Tandy's nor Dick Smith's but a genuine wholesaler who sells electronic components ie transistors, resistors etc. If they ask why you want it tell them "to clean circuit boards".

Here's the process I use from iTiC post. https://cannabis.community.forums.ozstoners.com/topic/56673-introducing-aho-aussie-hash-oil-the-sunny-method/

HINT: When evaporating the iso, just before all of the iso has gone I add a tspoon of water. This removes all of the other impurities that boil between the boiling point of the iso and the boiling point of water.

Hope it helps

I have a mate who has his own still and makes bourbon. A by product of his distilling is methanol which he gives me and I use it to make oil. No after taste or smell left in the oil after evaporation. I also use Isopropyl Alcohol 100% bought on line from Chemtools. They will post it to you. A bit expensive @ $25 per litre but does a really good job.

Epping hydro in Melbourne sells it 20 or 25 dollars ,about that price for one litre

So I'm presuming other hydro shops are getting in on the action too.

I've read of people using acetone , supposed to be OK as long as it's evaporated out

Any residue left ( if any ) is ok as our own body produces and can break down acetone.

SE.

As all has been said above.

The only thing i have a issue with is the bleaching in the sun.

The UV rays are degrading the THC at the same time as bleaching out the green color.

The longer in the sun the more u are killing the goodies in the oil...

I wondered about this and how  fast that degradation is?

If you think about it, u hang a nice new vibrant black tee on the line all day in the sun by the after noon there has been some fading this is the UV braking down the color pigments.

Works same way with THC.

That is why we store any canna product for long term storage in something dark so UV dosent get to it to strat the braking down of the THC.

For the short term it dosent last long enough for thr UV to b an issue because it has all been smoked.

It takes some time for the sun to get rid of all the green color...
