small set up help/tips

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Firstly im new to both growing and this page so i apologize in advance for how sloppy my skills are and my knowledge of this site in general. Im not very computer smart but im tying my best haha so please stick with me :)

So ive made my first ever spacebucket and though im pretty happy with how she goes so far im looking to upgrade.. i will upload some photos to paint a picture of what im going to explain and i just hope im on the right track.

My old man just gave me an old computer cupboard and id love to turn it into a nice little grow set up.

The inside where my setup will be is ( 500mm deep × 1000mm wide and 900mm high )

So what i have in mind is turning the top section into my grow station with a hanging fluro light ( just bought - photo below ) and ill make the height of it adjustable.

I will need to line the whole inside with some sort of reflection sheets ( im in NSW if any one knows some thing handy? I do know bunnings sell some wall infill sheets but dunno if there is a better option? )

I have 2x80mm fans that i can take off my spacebucket to use for intake/exhaust if suitable for that size area?

Ill add some photos of some plants i have just started that i am hoping to add into said space.

Plants are about 2 weeks old , first time grower so its all the basics ( yates potting mix with dynamic lifter + about 20% perlite - some of the pots just have cheap and nasty bunning potting mix , ive used NO nutes and i have no idea what ill need / where to get them ) all my plants have just been in my spacebucket / under a small bunnings fluro.

Thank you for your time and i hope to get some advice asap :) cheers guys * peace *

Do yourself a favour and visit a hydro shop,if none are close by at least check one out over the web,to get an idea of what's on offer regarding nutrients etc .Youll need a more powerful light soon as the one you have now isn't suitable for flowering.youll need some other type of medium too ,potting mixes work but not as good as other mediums. Read grow logs and as much as you can from the net,I'm sure someone will advise you on suitable equipment for a setup such as yours .goodluck with your grow.

Thanks edge,

I was looking at getting a 400w hps/hm pack of ebay , that says it can be used through out the whole grow .. whats your thoughts on that? Would that be suitable for that size area?

And ill definitely have to drop into a hydro shop , good idea.

Really appreciate the feed back!

If you want cheap and simple reflective lining from Bummings, grab some of their craftwood/mdf panels with the white surface on one side, the 3mm ones are pretty cheap and they're pretty easy to cut to size and bung on the walls.  Some panda film or mylar etc will do a better job though.

You'll need to ensure adequate ventilation of the space as well, especially if you bung some HID lighting in there.

Those T5's are great for clones, seedlings, and vegging young plants.  You can use them for flower, but they won't give great yields.  As for HID, if you want one for right through get HPS rather than MH, as HPS is best for flowering and that's more important, plus I've always found them more than adequate for veg.

If you want to grow in soil that's fine, but you need to make up a good light well draining soil mix rather than using shitty potting mixes.  Either that or go hydroponic, in which case coco and perlite using coco specific nutes is probably the easiest to pick up as a beginner.

You will find that space to be way to small for flowering plants out, though it will make a good veg chamber.  MIcro grows can and have been done, but you need to know what you're doing to do it well.  Canna has a tendency to stretch, a lot in some cases, at onset of flowering.  If you're serious about growing you'll probably find yourself having to invest in a grow tent, proper lighting, and proper ventilation with a carbon filter fairly quickly.

As SE said, read some grow logs for ideas and education.  Best of luck

Thanks heaps for your imput , i love that i have somewhere / people to talk to about this because it is a really enjoyable hobby but unfortunately not some thing easily to talk about haha.

Well i have about $800 put away for spending is there some thing you would recommend and or be able to link to me to take a look at getting? From the grows ive read / youtubed what i would like and that will most suit me is a 400w hps ballast and im guessing now a tent.

The set up will be in my garage but i also want to make it seem as less sus as possible ( not that anyone goes in there but me but just for peice and mind.. )

My only option i think i have with exhaust+carbon filter will be to go into the ceiling via the man hole

Im not sure how that will go with smell but im hoping itll work. ( thoughts ? )

My internet is limited until i get wifi hooked up ( in the process ) so any links you think i shoulf check out will save me alot of time / internet.

Really appreciate all the help and thank you so much!

Yeh ,I reckon you'd do better with a grow tent with at least 400w . Ask for a dual spectrum globe ( if your trying to save money) as it will do you for grow and flower stages, most cases it is better to bite the bullet and get a tent cos the cost and time in making a box can be even dearer,.most strains need a charcole filter ,and you probably will too ,but you can get that once you a few weeks into the flower stage.as that is when the pong usually gets going .If your using an unknown strain ,bag seed ,then the stretch could be minimal or many times the height from when you started to flower ,so a tent ,or larger space ,will give you more control in that respects. Your hydro guy should advise you on suitable nutrients and medium. Those kits will save you money , as long as your not getting unneeded stuff .A run to waste system is probably your best bet at this stage. The charcole filter can really go inside the tent or outside it ,If you want the stale air to go up the manhole.,just run your ducting up there but wherever you run the exhaust air there will be no odour ,but maybe humid air .ill ad another thing to consider ,when you go in your garage and open your tent ,box or whatever.a lot of light escapes into the shed ,that's fine but if the garage ain't too well seeled it could look a bit sus to any neighbour .good luck Dopedaddy.

Hey did you grow in that black bucket?what was the yield?
