No power for 8 hours

Recommended Posts

Hi all just got info power will be out tomorrow. I was thinking to be safe and not drown the roots due to no pump, I should drop the res down to expose the rootball to air and just leave a bit in the bottom. Lights will be out 3 hours earlier but not too concerned.

The res is due for a flush so should I dump majority of it before power is turned off?

Cheers

Now that's a tricky one LGG, at least you know it's coming though.

No idea how long you could let it go without causing drowning issues, but you'd have to reckon 8 hrs is pushing the boundaries of no damage, wouldn't think it would kill them though.  Leaving the roots exposed for that long could do a fair bit of damage though.

2 ideas spring to mind.  Easy one is leave it for 3 hrs or so, drain it all out and let it sit for an hr or so, and refill with fresh flush water and then dump that towards the end and refill with fresh nutes.  No bubbler is a problem but if you can pour the water in from a height that will initially help oxygenate it.

Other idea would be hand aeroponics for the whole time, grab a spray bottle and fill it with PH'd water, and give the roots a thorough misting every half hr or so until power is resumed.  Would keep the roots moist, with well oxygenated water, and also sorta flush, all for a few dollars on a spray bottle.

Can't think of an easier solution, but someone else might.

I have been reading around and have seen that leaving the water in is ok as it still has dissolved oxygen and that 8 hours should be fine without issues. It's a shitty situation especially when everything is running smoothly.

leave more water. more water will have more volume of d/o.

i would avoid having anything with sugar or carbs in the water over that period. if you have ever left a bucket of water with organic nutes/ sugars/ carbs in it you will kow it doesnt take long for bad bacteria to grab a hold in it. if your just using salt based nutes you will be fine.

If I were in your position I'd probably buy one of those pump up pressure spray bottles from bunnings to do some manual aeroponics on them for a few hours while giving the system a good clean out.  Once everything is hunky dorey then refill and wait until the power comes back on.
