Parliament passes medicinal cannabis laws

On the one-year anniversary of medicinal cannabis campaigner Dan Haslam's death, parliament has passed laws allowing the cultivation of medicinal cannabis.

Senators paid tribute to the tireless efforts of Mr Haslam's mother, Lucy, who was instrumental in campaigning for change after medicinal cannabis helped her son with severe nausea brought on by his chemotherapy treatment.

The laws cleared the upper house on Wednesday, one year after her son died following a five-year battle with bowel cancer.

'Lucy, this wouldn't have happened without your contribution,' Greens leader Richard Di Natale told parliament.

'Your family's grief, your family's pain and suffering, has not been in vain.'

Rural Health Minister Fiona Nash said the 'missing piece' laws allowed patients access to medicinal cannabis legally cultivated and manufactured in Australia.

The health department is also considering rescheduling medicinal cannabis, which is still classified as an illicit drug.

Labor and the Greens welcomed the laws as a good first step, acknowledging there was still a long way to go before patients could legally use medicinal cannabis.

'No family should have to choose between getting their loved one the medicine they need and breaking the law,' Labor frontbencher Katy Gallagher said.

Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm said it was time Australia legalised recreational cannabis use as well.

Most people had tried at it some point, including him, and US President Barack Obama, he said.

'It is not a legitimate use of government power to prohibit adults from doing something that does not harm others,' he said.

fully organic  outdoor in a greenhouse, just want to grow 10 or so plants at a time. cant be arsed with manufacture just want to cultivate

Great day for all! Having both my parents suffer from chemotherapy and not wanting to break the law to ease they're suffering it is a right step in the direction of what we all want, legal weed! Maybe they should have the legislation of marijuana to fix they're revenue problem?!

But I did read that cultivate means to grow the plant and nothing about separating the buns from the plant

That's correct. You can get licenced to just cultivate or just manufacture or both.

 

Cultivation is just the growing. Manufacture will be the removal of buds drying and processing into a tincture. At this stage I think smoking buds is still off the cards although I couldn't find anything about it in the act.

 

I would easily be classed as a fit person for growing. No criminal record. Well respected in my community and workplace. Just would be too hard for me to grow my own perso with a legal grow going and an inspector popping in all the time

AHHHH  You are all missing the point..  I didn't bother reading it but none of you will get a license to grow your own no matter how sick you are.. That is not what they want.. Nobody will be able grow legally for personal

 

Also, they cant let one person grow legally for personal use and not let someone else just because they have a criminal record or something.

 

They will be giving approval to people and business's who will produce or manufacture it under strict government control and to be sold in pharmacy.. 

 

Funny how they prohibit us and throw us in jail, make us out to be scum for the last 70+ years but now they see its not so bad they want to become the dealer.

 

Anyhow,  like i said .  Nobody will be permitted to grow their own..
