Filter setup

Recommended Posts

Was just looking at the photo of your set up. I see a cool tube, however your running your filter, into the fan, through the cool tube and out the tent. I know your on a tight budget, but you ideally want to separate the cool tube from the rest of the ventilation. You want cool air being transferred past the globe in the tube, and exhausted from the tent, the reasoning being the cool air keeps the globe temp down, prolonging the life of your globe.( Aswell as transferring heat out of the grow area) Maybe when you upgrade the exhaust fan, you could use the cheaper fan you are currently using to run through the tube. Another tip, if you are leaking light through the pinholes from the sewing of the zippers, you can buy Mylar tape and run a length over the seams on the inside of the tent. Works a treat. I was just wondering how much suction I should be getting through my brand new Carbon filter?... It arrived today,  425cfm filter matched with 260cfm fan for my 1.2 x 1.2 x 2m tent...  I am just waiting til lights on to set it up.. The thing is I hooked it all up outside the tent..  Fan sucking from filter but I don't seem to be getting a lot of suction through the filter. If I light a cigarette the smoke will barely attract toward it unless its a few mills away from the prefilter..

How much suction should I be getting?  I have never used carbon filter so I don't know what's normal.. I have heard about negative pressure in the tent but I cant see how that is possible without some decent suction.. I have about 30cm of duct between filter and fan but that shouldn't make a difference right?

Please help

hey str

have you tried carbon filter in a different position?

I have set up like you but it goes

carbon filter inside tent > duct to cool tube > cooltube > ducting to centi fan(outside tent) > ducting to outside.

my fan is also in a timber box with roof insulation around it.

I also run a speed controller for fan, one of these http://www.jaycar.com.au/Power-Products-Electrical/Power-Supply/Laboratory-Bench/0-260VAC-Variable-Laboratory-Autotransfomer-%28Variac%29---500VA/p/MP3080 no humming on low speed.

i use the fan speed controller and set it so i can just just see the tent "sucking" in.

Thanks for the replies.

Burner, Are you saying I should have two separate exhausts? one filter and one cooltube?  I have the fan sucking air through the filter then blowing it through cooltube and out the tent, I hooked it up now without cooltube. Filter/Fan/out . Its working for the smell 99% but still no negative pressure.. 2 exhausts would be good I am worried about noise.  I think I will need intake fan also to bring cool air in so then I would have 3 noisy fans... Yeah I have to tape up all the pin holes.

......................, Yeah I tried a few variations. Definitely cant have any ducting between fan and filter. Only seems to be working just with the fan mounted straight to filter.. I think I just need a proper fan, Although this is rated 260cfm it blows a lot better than it sucks.. Do you only get negative pressure when all vents are closed? If you leave one open at bottom the walls will still suck in?  Speed controller would be good too especially with a bigger fan although this fan seems bare minimum right no so it needs to run full speed.. I think if I get about 400+ cfm fan with controller ill be able to get my walls to suck in.

I know this sounds funny but I was setting up once and was well medicated when I noticed the airflow arrow...

When I was growing in the cupboard, running a cooltube as well I turned it around a had it blow through the filter...up on the top of the cupboard.  It got too convoluted for me to get everything  (cooltube, cf, fan) all in to one system with it inside, so I chucked it on top.  It may not be best practice but I noticed no difference in quality or health of my plants..and no smell, probably 5 veg and flower grow cycles as well.

I never got to use my new hyperfan but the can 125 and can 2600 cf were into another grow and going strong.  I also noticed when 'blowing' through the cf it was much more quiet than having a full on exhaust thumping around the place.  Aside from all my wafffling, +1 to the above posters advice...and read and study.

You will scrape up enough somehow to get a quality fan and filter and you won't look back.

Peace and all good things

Thanks Faith.. All my plants turned out male so its not like I don't have the time now :(

I am really spewing but what can ya do..  I will try that method too when I get a chance to go again. I will probably stick with this filter, as long as it works but I definitely think my fan is a bit small for the filter size.. Like 260cfm min to efficiently operate this filter and what I have is 259cfm fan.. Thanks everyone for the advice

G'day stiritup :peace:

Naycha hit it on the head.   I use this article often as a reference when setting up.  You can see how a few factors can drastically increase the demand for more airflow/volume.  It is from another site so I hope it is cool to post.

I think I picked up the link through somebody's (?) ozstoner post a while back actually lol  I think it is a good reference.  Sorry to hear about all the males.  Are you going to crack some more?.

Peace and good gardening

Gday Faith :)

Thanks, good read.. I may have had my math a bit wrong, according to my research before hand i would need 176cfm then adding 20% with filter, + 20% ducting and cooltube. So when i saw this kit on ebay with 260cfm it was pretty much best option and didn't have any more budget.  The filter is rated 425cfm  and all the others in the same budget were much smaller with same fan.. The filter Specs state it works effectively  between 260-400cfm so the ebay seller has coupled with the bare min fan..  Thought i would get away with it.   If i go to 400cfm with speed control i think my results will be much better
