Weed hasn't ruined peoples lives

The owner of American medical marijuana site Stoner Sloth has joined the chorus of criticism aimed at the NSW Government's anti-drug campaign of the same name.

The Colorado-based owner of stonersloth.com, who goes by the name of Stoner Dan, accused the NSW campaign of fear-mongering.

There are hundreds of thousands of pot smokers that work full-time jobs, pay their bills, help our nations run, even teach our children," he said. "One way or another weed hasn't ruined people's lives."

The #stonersloth campaign, created by advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi for the NSW Department of Premier and cabinet, depicts young people who smoke marijuana as sloths who are academic and social failures.

"(It's) so over-dramatic with the stoner stereotype ... pushing the stoner stigma with negativity and fear," Stoner Dan said.

He said the campaign ignored the medical benefits of marijuana which is being trialed in NSW to help children with drug-resistant epilepsy.

"There are people who can now live their lives out there thanks to cannabis and its medicinal qualities that haven't found relief any other way," he said. "They don't deserve a stigma to their personality because of what works for them to keep them healthy."

The National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre will ask the NSW Premier's department to retract its claim that the centre's research lay behind the social media campaign.

Centre director Jan Copeland said the organisation was not consulted about the content of the campaign.

The series of video and GIFs aimed at young people has been widely ridiculed and become the subject of several parodies.

One entrepreneur has launched a range of Stoner Sloth t-shirts, capitalising on the campaign.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Premier and Cabinet said there was no plan to cancel the campaign in light of the reaction and it will continue to run until early January.

Campaign creator Saatchi & Saatchi Sydney has been approached for comment.

IT IS TIME TO REPLACE THE NATIONAL CANNABIS PREVENTION AND INFORMATION CENTRE (NCPIC)

The ‪#‎stonersloth‬ anti-cannabis media campaign is not just a joke.
it is a very serious reflection on the Mike Baird NSW Government.

More importantly it highlights the damage done by the biased and sensationalised anti-cannabis propaganda published by the National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre (NCPIC) and the effect that propaganda has on the general Australian institutional views toward cannabis and the Australian citizens who use it.

This campaign is the direct result of NCPIC work despite reports that "Prof. Jan Copeland from The National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre (NCPIC) said they will be asking the NSW Premier's department to retract its claim that the centre's research lay behind its #stonersloth anti-marijuana social media campaign.".

Jan Copeland and NCPIC may have had no direct involvement in the artistic content of this particular campaign but that doesn't change the fact the advertising company behind it have stated very clearly and publicly that they did base their campaign on the NCPIC's work.

Mike Baird's NSW Government and this advertising company have produced a biased and sensationalised media campaign because it emulates the biased and sensationalised NCPIC work it was based on.

Making public the fact it was based on that NCPIC work in the belief this gave extra credibility to their campaign clearly displays that they erroneously believe the NCPIC to be a credible and reliable source for information regarding cannabis in the Australian community whose work was worthy of emulation and that they see this 'reefer maddness' style approach as being OK blind to the damage it causes to people.

Of most concern to Cannabis Compassion Australia is the fact that Mike Baird and this advertising company are just the tip of the iceberg of businesses, organisations, government departments, health professionals, law enforcement agencies, addiction councilors, schools and educational facilities, individuals and the many others in Australia that also erroneously believe the NCPIC to be a credible and reliable source for information regarding cannabis in the Australian community and who are also basing their work and knowledge about cannabis on this same biased an sensationalised NCPIC work as Mike Baird's office and this advertising company have done.

We believe this biased and sensationalised anti-cannabis propaganda that is being published by the NCPIC is one of the main reasons that Australia is so far behind so many other places in the world regarding cannabis law reforms

In submission No.86 to the Regulator of Medicinal Cannabis Bill 2014, Cannabis Compassion Australia said the "NCPIC need to be replaced entirely in order to supply Australia with the government funded cannabis information service they NEED and can rely on to publish all relevant cannabis information (not just anti-cannbis) that is based wholly on science and free of any bias, personal agendas or conflicting interests." and we still strongly hold this view.

That is why Cannabis Compassion Australia is currently seeking legal advice regarding this campaign and the NCPIC and are looking into any official courses of action that can be taken regarding them and we are encouraging others to do the same.

The NCPIC and this media campaign are both misleading, discriminatory and promote discrimination, they are factually inaccurate, they promote the dehumanisation of children, they promote division and bullying in schools and the community in general, the NCPIC practices racial profiling of Australian cannabis users, the NCPIC has questionable ties to pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer and they are both a total waste of public money and do alot of harm in the community.

The #stonersloth media campaign has highlighted above all that...

IT IS TIME TO REPLACE THE NATIONAL CANNABIS PREVENTION AND INFORMATION CENTRE (NCPIC) ENTIRELY WITH A NEW GOVERNMENT FUNDED CANNABIS INFORMATION SERVICE AUSTRALIANS CAN RELY ON TO BE FREE FROM BIAS, QUESTIONABLE TIES TO PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES AND 'REEFER MADNESS' AGENDA.

PLEASE HELP US TRY AND MAKE THIS HAPPEN BY LIKING AND SHARING THIS POST. THE MORE PEOPLE FIGHTING FOR THIS THE BETTER.
