A cannabis farm was discovered just yards from a Merseyside police station - after officers saw hundreds of pigeons keeping warm.

Around 300 birds were attracted to heat emanating from lights set up in the skunk factory in Newton-le-Willows.

Police based just yards away in Newton police station executed a search warrant after becoming suspicious that it was the only roof in the area without frost on it.

They found 14 cannabis plants, capable of producing up to £1,200 worth of the drug every ten weeks, and cannabis growing equipment.

Since the cannabis farm in Market Street was shut down, the flock of pigeons have moved on.

No-one has been arrested.
