Round 2, here I go

Recommended Posts

So last year was my first year ever growing my own plant.

I had a great learning experience and from reading through this forum and around the 'net, I have a few I ideas I want to try this time around.

My first ever thread is here:

https://cannabis.community.forums.ozstoners.com/topic/71279-my-first-grow-any-tips/

I ended up getting about 125gm of dried weed from that plant. I think I buggered up the last couple of weeks and drying process and while the weed was very tasty and did not have bad after effects, the potency was not as good as I had hoped.

Last year I accidentally came into the possession of about a dozen or so seeds. This year, after asking around, I only have two.

So I need to know what is the best way to germinate these guys?

Last year I tried the water germination (left them overnight and then planted them). However, looking at some youtube videos I dont think I left them in the water for long enough as only about 2 or 3 of the seeds germinated and only 1 went on to being a plant.

I dont have enough seeds this year to waste, so it would be good to have some advice about what is the best way to germinate and seed these guys.

Oh, its good to be back here on this site. Makes me think of summer and gardening!

Subbed. Good luck with the grow mate. I normally do exactly what you do, put the seeds in some water over night then throw them straight in the soil. I water the soil when i plant them, then every 2-3 days after and leave them in warm shaded spot. When they start poppin up they go straight in the sun.

Looking forward to see how ya go!

Cheers lads.

I went to Bunnings have put the girls in a glass of demineralised water, which I have heard is better for the germination success rate.

I remembered last year, I did not actually do this type of germination like I said above, but instead I put the seeds in some moist paper towels and left them outside in a zip lock bag. That wasnt too successful, and I had been thinking of using this glass of water technique all winter that I actually thought I had dont it like this last year, hehe.

Anyway, I have some pics attached to help out others in the thread and what it takes to grow a plant. Im no expert but I want to record what I use for all the others out there to get a good idea.

I bought some vermiculite and peat moss this year. I will mix this with my potting mix (also pictured, this was the same bag I used last year). Im thinking equal third parts of each of those three ingredients.

I also have showing some of the nutrients I used last year. I use the white bottle of seasol for heat stress reduction (it gets HOT in Adelaide) and I use a purple bottle of liquid potash during the vegetative stage (I dont have a picture of the potash as I used it all up). The power feed was used throughout the whole life of the plant, but I found that the potash seemed to work more effectively.

I have tried to used products which I can buy at Bunnings rather than some specialty cannibis shops or online. This is out of ease mainly; I live close to a Bunnings and dont want to buy online.

Anyway, if you have any questions or comments, let me know.

Just a quick update - the seeds have been in the glass of water for about 24hrs. One of them fell to the bottom of the glass this morning, the other one just about an hour ago.

I will leave them there overnight and then put them in moist paper towel tomorrow. My plan is to plant them on Sunday or Monday evening.

Curiously, it was the lighter coloured one which fell to the bottom of the glass first. This goes against my expectation that darker seeds are more healthier, therefore, the darker seed should fall to the bottom first. Hmmm....

This morning I had a look at the seeds.

One had germinated and was showing the start of a root. The other one wasnt showing any signs of germination. It would have been nice to know if this was the seed that sank first or second.

This morning I made a soil mixture of my potting mix, peat moss and vermiculite in about a 2,1,1 ratio.

I moistened it a bit using distilled water and planted the germinating seed in it one index finger knuckle deep, root facing downwards. I cut the top of a soft drink bottle of and place that above the seed in the pot, this, Im hoping, will help keep some moisture in the soil and get the humidity up. Its currently hot in Adelaide, but will cool down during the week. Its a 120mm diameter poly pot from bunnings. The pot is not sitting outside, but in the shade. I wont move it out into the direct sun until the plant is showing.

I will leave the other non-germinating seed in the moist paper towels for a day or two more and plant that one during the week, showing a root or not.

Best of luck Roy, when I've put bottles over germinating seeds like that in the past Ive just used the last 6 inches or so. Then maybe once a day take it off & spray inside with a spray bottle to keep the humidity up. I have no idea if its better or worse but right now in Adelaide you should be right just to leave outside somewhere where it gets a fair bit of sun & it should be right. I only spray the soil with a spray bottle to until the plant is a few inches tall. Ive had pale seeds sprout & darker seeds sprout myself. I have always been under the impression that darker seeds are better though, I guess they're formed better or something. Im sure some-one with more knowledge will be around shortly. How many seeds u got left?

gl roy. I also use this method. put them in a shot glass of boiled water (cooled to room temp) then wait for them to sink... normally 24 hours but might be more for some... once sunk then on the tissue paper. once roots have come out them I plant them.

So far every seed I have bought has worked using this method. which has been 5 autos and a fem seed. 100% so far ;)
