Growing your own medicine with federal approval would require the government to remove itself from the UN single convention on narcotics otherwise it'd be a legal nightmare with them having to issue licenses to individuals, constantly check on everyone who is going to be expected to maintain a seed to consumption tracking system to ensure no black market diversion, the government would have to be the sole source of genetics which bottlenecks the supply and speaking of the supply the government would also have to take possession of your entire harvest.

I believe it's due to articles 23 and 28 of that convention that deal with all that stuff as it treats cannabis the same as opium and you can be damn well sure that when someone points out the medical considerations in the same convention fingers will be pointed at cannabinoid availability in measurable and controllable doses that can be replicated indefinitely as the only safe form of true medicine.  It won't matter that every plant and patient is different meaning that they can never produce a product with fewer side effects or even keep up with a person trying to treat themselves, it will all be finger waging at scenarios like you wouldn't want your heart medication to be hit and miss so why's cannabis to be any different? Then anything home made will instantly remain an illicit drug in the eyes of the law because we'll have the medicinal cannabis we fought so hard to get legally available to all those with a valid medicinal need.

If anyone going reads this and needs an analogy for the plants and people being different compare them to a dog like a german shepard.  From a distance they might all look the same but you get up close and you see difference in the pattern, one might have a floppy ear, etc. and when you play with them for a bit you can clearly see the differences.  Cannabis and people are the same and a pharmaceutical company will never be able to keep up with replicating plants at an individual basis for a single strain of cannabis let alone with multiple varieties looking for what works so from the get go they can only supply an inferior product.  Their bottlenecked supply would be great for initial testing of patients to steer them in the right direction when it comes to growing their own and for those that can't have a intoxicating medicine like children with epilepsy but for everyone else we're just getting screwed.
