First grow - Beginner Questions

Recommended Posts

Hey friends

I am in the process of planning my first ever grow and it's going to be outdoors. I'm planning to grow one or two plants in pot pots for my backyard.

I have some questions that hopefully you guys can clear up.

1. Is there a quality soil mix I can just buy from Bunnings that would be suitable?
I've researched some soil mixes and they've alot of ingredients. Right now my plan is to buy a retail soil mix and adding in perlite.

2. How much do I have to consider bad weather?

Should I do anything special if there's a heavy storm or its an abnormally cold night?

Thanks all

bunnings have coco, perlite and vermiculite if you would like to go that way, it saves guessing what nutrients are already in the soil/potting mix, makes seedlings easier to take care of i think, lets you slowly introduce the food and not overdose them and kill them. but whatever you get from bunnings just be sure to give it a good soak for 30 mins or more then rinse it out for a couple of days, thats what i do with the coco, perlite and vermiculite. its also much more soft and loamy than soil.

weather depends where you live. and how bad the weather is but yeah they say if you dont like the conditions the plant wont be to happy either haha

they do sell those greenhouse things in the bunnings outdoor garden section check them out for night time. i think it would help them alot in bad conditions

I am doing an outdoor grow using pots and use a 50/50 mix Of perlite and Osmacote premier potting mix in 25L pastic pots. One of the things I have found very helpful is to find the sunniest spot in the yard for the time of the year. It may sound obvious but many are restricted by stealth requirements. I also have a garden bed prepared for a couple of in ground plants this year which is situated in the sweet spot in my yard. I have also thought about how to disguise it in case of unforeseen circumstances.

The garden bed has been prepared with the view of low/no cost. I wanted to keep the whole grow under $50 including seeds.

Because your in pots are portable I would move them out of any rain or storms, at least under shelter and if you are going to get a frost or really low temps then I would be moving them inside to a shed if possible. They can tolerate the cold and the rain and the wind but the end result is always about how much this all affects the yeild and potency and because these conditions will put the plant under stress its best not to let them stress.

Good Luck

Agree with the coco. Much easier for lots of reasons, no guessing, easy to work out any issue you get, faster grow and better yeilds.

The bunnings coco needs major flushing tho, better to buy a coco/perlite mix from a hydro place. Get some A & B for coco and gogo!!

I found these compressed coco blocks at a discount store really cheap and easy to buy in bulk. Add water and you have 10 liters of soil.

But it is good to realize that coco has almost no nutrients, it is great because there is a lot of air in it and the roots love it but you will need to add some good nutrient rich soil or manure.
