First time growing!

Hi all, SWIM needs some advice on growing for a beginner. 

 

so far he has:

 

Nice 5x5 shed

Lots of seeds (bubble gum kush)

 

He needs advice on what kind of lights to use, what techniques to use (thinking Sea of Green but not sure if we need a mother plant first) and general advice.

He will be growing in soil.

Any advice is appreciated thanks!

ok - so is he going to use the shed or put a tent in the shed?

 

Lights - MH or HPS - 600 - 1000w 

 

Sea of green is using clones from a mother plant to achieve a rolling two week harvest

 

Have a fan moving air around in the shed

 

soil mix has to be good - can't be crap, ie good drainage - not full of "water crystals" that hold water for plants (Dont use that) - if ya not sure on that .. ummm, check out my thread

I grow in soil - might try coco one day but I know some basics of soil so i am good for now. 

 

Get a moisture meter to check out dry soil is - DONT over water - ie - water like once a  week if that when real small - even when they are bigger and really suxing it up - water till ya see water at the bottom come out, then dont water for like 2-3 days checking on it with the meter. 

 

I am sure others will chime in - but yeah - tenting or not?

A budget will help, how much does "your friend" have to spend ?

Not much at the moment. Was thinking of getting some cheapish LED's from bunnings or are they shit for the job?

you just answered you own question "cheap shitty leds from bunnings"

For starting the seedlings off I would personally recommend getting a 80w Philips CFL these things rock i've used them before, perfect for beginners and you can still flower with them and bud (check my old grows)

Like the others have said above get a HPS / MH 600+ watt globe and ballast.

Sorry, for some reason i missed your post. He was going to curtain off an area in the shed and set some lights up on the inside of the curtain. 

 

 

 

 

What should he do to start growing? Should he just germinate a few seeds,then just replant them and wait and check if they are female  and continue from there or is there more to it?

that is essentially how to grow, yes

that's pretty much it mate, even better if the seeds are 'Feminized' then you know it's a lady straight up.

If growing in soil id also recommend Canna Terra Professional + Canna Bio nutrient range that's what I'm using with my grows.

Start seeds in a moist paper towel or in a glass of water until the crack tails then transplant into small pots or jiffy pellets.

I asked and he said that when he bought them it said the were feminized but once can never be certain.
