Hi All,

First time poster and first time grower here. I'm seeing a few problems with my seedlings as they develop I'm hoping I can get some advice on.

I germinated two seeds on the 22nd of April and planted them in to Debco Seed raising mix and under 24 hour light on the 24th once they showed their tap root. They're now under 18/6 and about 5cm high but are showing odd leaf formation. Perhaps I'm being too concerned at this early stage, but given this is my first run I don't really know what's normal and what isn't.

I'm wondering if the seed raising mix is too hot and they're getting some nute burn? They've been fed plain rainwater up until now.

Thanks, appreciate any advice you can give.

Wow, now that is real unwell

First question, do those cups have any holes in them, in the bottom. If not then the roots are going to be constantly in water and they don't like that, the water needs to be able to drain away. IMO once or twice a day at that age is way too much

Second question, rain water? How is your rainwater stored? If its within a metal tank then the metals can leach into the water and alter your salt levels. Also as the rainwater washes off your roof, through your gutters into your tank, nutrient from dirt, bird shit, leaves and other crap will also be leached out. I once used rainwater but noticed a marked decline in the plants health and have never used it again. You are better off using tap water. Tap water is treated to kill off any nasties in the water and also contains trace amounts of nutrients which can sustain the plant. I use tap water for everything (Feeding and Flushing), but I use a large tank (200ltr) to store my tap water to allow the chlorine gas to be released over a 24hr period prior to using it on my plants.

I have to agree with Spider_b, if you want to save them, get them into pots, cos they don't like where they are.

Hi,

To answer your questions, yes, the cups have holes in them, but when I water I don't drench the cup, so I've never had any runoff. When I say twice a day, it's up to twice a day, depending on how dry the soil looks/feels. If anything, I'm possibly underwatering. The rainwater was collected in a bucket. It's not from a tank, but I might give plain old tapwater a go from now on.

In hindsight, one thing I didn't do whch perhaps I should have is to flush the seed raising mix before planting. Just going off other posts about deformed leaves on seedlings, they seemed to be nute burn related. Or genetics....these two seeds were sold to me privately from a breeder. It's probable they're off the one plant.

The other thing I'll do differently is to use jiffy pellets next time.

My plan once the lights come back on is to plant them in to larger pots and water with tapwater. Hopefully they come good? *fingers crossed*

i would say no , not while there like that , you would just add more stress

prob with transplanting now is you most likely don't have enough roots

to hold that seed raising mix together while moving , making it easy to cause

more damage ,

but hey man your the farmer , you know more of the ins & outs of what was

done or not done so it's your call what you do

if they were genetic mutants i don't think you would see the yellowing

they should/would be mutant but healthy

Debco seed mix , plenty people have used it before ,

not to say you didn't get a bad batch but unlikely
