Polyfoam box - bad idea?

Recommended Posts

After having a good think about it... I came up with this idea (See attached pics)

I have modded it more now so the lights do not touch the prop and checking temps as well - inside the propagator its over 30c - so I also added a PC fan to the side to vent out heat.

The box works - the only worry I have is the smell from it seems a little toxic  :/ could kill them if they even sprout up??

Ideas?

I use to use the same set up as you have made when I first started to grow hydro an get my seeds to sprout.

But I had a small 125mm 240/volt pc fan mounted on the side of the box sucking air out of the box, with round vent on the other side of the box that you could  adjust the air flow on plus it had fly screen on the inlet to keep any bugs out of the box, plus I had a thermostat joined to the fan so I could keep the temps under control that way.

The girls loved it an I never had any trouble with the smell buggering the plants around.

Itchy is right about the foam box giving of toxic gas if it ever catchs fire it can kill you the gas it gives off very bad shit.

Hi ya Dingo,

Thanks for the reply.

I have added a second fan now as well as I had been thinking about it all day - tore in to some old bit and found a good fan.

So now I got 2 x 110~120mm fans - one for in take and one for exhaust.

I have been keeping a close eye on the lid and how close the lights are to both the seedlings and the lid.

I keep checking the lid for any signs of melting or heat as I got 2 x 24watt CFL's 6500k cool whites in there and well.. nothing.

No smell, no heat on the lid - all good really.

But I will say you have made me think that I need another lid for long term so I'll make up something for it.

As for the seeds... the little buggers are jumping up super fast - the rate its going I am going to have to get rid of some lol
