Corrupt police took drugs: court

By Jewel Topsfield

A POLICE officer took 13.6 kilograms of marijuana worth $100,000 during a drug bust carried out by corrupt detectives, a Melbourne court heard today.

Three Victorian detectives and a former detective today faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court on charges of trafficking cannabis worth at least $100,000.

Witness Daniel May told the court he had arranged to deliver the cannabis to another man in exchange for $100,000 at the St Kilda Marina on Melbourne's foreshore on May 10, 1999.

But the drug deal went sour when two police cars pulled up and Mr May was grabbed by an officer, handcuffed and thrown face down in the front of his ute.

Mr May said that in the split second before he was wrestled down he saw a policeman climb onto the back of the ute and remove two garbage bags containing the marijuana from a tool box.

Before I even hit the truck the policeman was already on the back pulling the bag out," said Mr May, a building contractor.

Former Detective Sergeant David John Waters, 43, Detective Senior Constable Stephen Russell Campbell, 34, Detective Senior Constable Peter John Alexander, 36, and Detective Sergeant Glenn Saunders, 43, face five drug charges each including stealing, trafficking and possessing cannabis.

Mr May said that when he was finally allowed to stand up, a police officer said they knew he was just a delivery boy and he would not have to take "the rap".

"One said 'Don't get in that shit again, just go', and I took off," Mr May said.

Anti-corruption detectives have alleged nobody was arrested or charged by police at the time as a result of the seizure.

Mr May, who has indemnity from being prosecuted in Victoria over the drug deal, said he had organised an acquaintance to bring the marijuana from South Australia.

"Mate, the South Australian economy runs on marijuana, everyone knows that," he told the court.

"Every second house grows marijuana."

Mr May denied being aware of rumours the marijuana came from motorcycle club the Gypsy Jokers.

The case, before Magistrate Frank Hodgens, will continue tomorrow.

Detectives face trial over stolen cannabis

October 13, 2003 - 2:14PM

Three Victorian detectives and a former detective were today ordered to stand trial on charges that they stole then sold cannabis worth $100,000.

Magistrate Frank Hodgens found it was open to a jury to conclude that the four men had intercepted the cannabis, stolen it, then allowed it to be sold.

Former Detective Sergeant David John Waters, 43, Detective Sergeant Glenn Saunders, 43, Detective Senior Constable Peter John Alexander, 36, and Detective Senior Constable Stephen Russell Campbell, 34, have each been charged with five drug-related counts, including stealing, possessing, and trafficking cannabis.

The four all pleaded not guilty today in the Melbourne Magistrates Court, after Mr Hodgens committed them to a county court trial.

Corruption investigators alleged the four men had seized the drugs, which had been brought in from South Australia, at the St Kilda Marina in May 1999, after a tip-off.

No-one was arrested or charged by the police after the interception, and the drugs were later sold, it was alleged.

Mr Hodgens agreed that parts of the evidence from the man who allegedly sold the cannabis were "inconsistent and unsure".

However, his credibility and veracity were matters for a jury, Mr Hodgens said.

The four officers' diaries showed they had been involved in an interception, but that no drugs had been seized, the court heard.

A jury could conclude the officers were "party to an agreement to steal the drugs", and then to "an agreement to remain silent" about what had happened, the magistrate said.

The four men remain on bail until a County Court case conference on February 12 next year.

We have the same problem here (US). After they steal mj, why can't they give it to peolpe who use it as meds.?

some people lace their pot and im quite sure if some mental patient toked on a bit of weed laced with speed or something like that, the mj community would definately regret it :thumbdown for med pot to be released i would imagine there is some total bullshit regulations to prevent this kinda thing happening...

police get the name pigs for many reasons, mainly they deserve it for the way they think they are all that hiding behind their gun and badge, abusing their powers and using intimidation to get what they want, STEALING wether its drugs, money, what ever.....Australia's police force IMO is so corrupt its not funny...

I have been in houses where the cops have came around looking for guys, they have torn the place apart pretty much and WITHOUT A WARRENT :D started picking up joint buts, sappies (some with pot, most without) and tried to accuse every1 in the house of dealing and such, then when the owner of the house said give that all back and we wont ring internal affairs about that dime bag sitting in ur front pocket that u didnt mention to "top cop"standing next to u....low and behold he asked to meet his partner back out in the car and everything was handed back except the pot in his pocket....he said that it was pointless him taking it as it would be thrown out as it was obtained without a warrent and my mate said well wtf u take it in the first place and the pig start patting him down accusing him of concealing weapons..... :thumbdown he made off with i think 4.3 grams that night....whats a cop to do with pot he cant hand in :smoke

police in australia abuse the shit out of their so called power and when u burst their bubble and have them relise they are just truely hiding behind the gun and badge they wear, they all seem to crack the shit severly, acuse you of being on drugs then try everything they can to lock you up as they are pissed off....i personally hate police, their 5 hour response times are a joke, they dont help the community in anyway that i have seen and so far all they have done for me is really piss me off....

sure police can do some good like when it comes to cases of rape, murder, etc. but personally they really have no clue of wtf they are doing when it comes to helping the community....

FUCK THE POLICE!!!

Fuckin A.

Police are just organised crime gang members, and they should be renamed the BLUE GANG because of being like a gang in a blue uniform.

There are a few decent cops out there, but there are far more asshole cops than good ones.

Maybe Australia should go the way that NZ will end up. (run by gangs like black power, mob, triads etc).

Of course the other alternative option is to do something about it but .......... y'know............. work .. organisation .... records .... statements ....... stoners!!! ............. it's easier just to post about it.

I should add that I'm not 'dissing' your anger or disagreeing with your condemnation, just suggesting that there is a way through this 'phase' if you're up to it. Nothing is new, the UK had this prob at the end of the 60's and into the 70's. It can be handled.

Eddie
