What if a foreigner gets caught in Sydney

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I´m a new member here and live in Oulu, Finland. Anyways, a few days ago I was offered a chance to go to Sydney to study for 9 months. Naturally the first thing what crossed my mind was the pot. So I have a few questions to you aussies, and I´ll be really grateful if somebody can give me the answers.

First, are the drug laws in Sydney (southern Australia?) the same to foreigners than they are for local people?

Second, what the laws are in practice? I know what they are theorically, but what do you get in real life if you get caught from use, posession or growing..

Third, what´s the public opinion about smoking? Can you smoke in public places, how elderly people or police thinks about harmless spliff here and there.

Fourth, the last but not the least, what´s the quality of stuff they sell on the streets, what´s the price, is it usually hash or bud, how easilly I can get it or how easilly I can get to know some people from my school or from the city (is there any bars where pot smokers usually go in Sydney?)? That´s just because I´d be living in a school campus and I don´t know is it possible to grow there..

ps. And how introspective is Australian cannabis culture? I´m just afraid that maybe it´s not so easy for me to get to know anybody in Sydney because I´m from Europe..

poro,

Sydney is a beautiful town. It is also expensive - not just the cost of living, but the cost of pot as well (over $300/ounce). It is generally considered risky to smoke in public these days. I have often seen people being shaken down by undercover police in the streets. Sniffer dogs are regularly seen in the night club districts and at some railway stations. to the best of my knowledge, foreigners are treated the same for minor offences. A major crime would probably get you deported.

That said, cannabis is relatively accepted by the general population as not a big deal. We have just had a rash of politicians 'come out' about useage in their youth.

The general rule is to behave and not draw attention to yourself, this should keep you out of the reach of police. As far as the law stands, cautions apply for small quantities (about 15 grams I think), fines for larger quantites. I don't smoke in public anywhere as much as I used to. There are some nice spots in some of our public parks that are a nice retreat from the city, when in the need for a quiet spot to toke, but generally speaking I smoke at home these days, safer.

You shouldn't have too much trouble finding a smoke ... its a popular pasttime here :D The quality varies but I rarely have a problem finding the garde I need. Hashish is rare but the green can be some of the finest pot you are likely to try.

It's up to you but if I got the chance to go to the otherside of the world, you wouldn't see me for the dust.

If you do get here and you need a hand, PM me.

Sydney has some of the best weed I've smoked, Ive only been here a couple months, but its awesome smoke, when u can get it.. there are lots of dodgy people that will rip you off though. I've scored two lots of weed since I've been here, and the first was average, just some buds a friend of mine from Uni had sitting there, he gave me them for free :D But the second lot I paid $20 for a bag which was probably nearly about 2g's.. but that was a really good deal, and that stuff was some of the best smoko ive ever had in 6 years of smoking MJ ;) Other than that, everyone Ive asked either tried to rip me off, or given me phone numbers which are inexistant, or just seem really troublesome after Ive approached them. Im a pretty big boy and can look after myself, I think this is the only reason why I havent been robbed yet, hehe.. Ive never had any problems with anyone here, but my sister tells me there are sniffer dogs at the train stations and such.. but I guess they are looking for bigger and better things.. but my mother tells me that around her place, they really target weed smokers.. coppers put weed smokers on par with heroin addicts, which is bullshit.
