Another benefit of shell grit is spread on the top of the soil to keep slugs & snails away, birds will love it though.

Supermarket... pet supplies aisle... Trill brand, 'Shell Grit' $3.99 per kg. Much finer than the chicken grits and if you want it finer grab a small marble mortar and pestle... usually available at larger department stores (Target, Kmart etc) and junk importers (eg Reject shop) for around the $15 mark.
