My first grow - any tips?

Recommended Posts

Old Coat hanger, cotton or garden string...turn coat hanger into 3-4 spikes  with a bend at one end. Use these spikes in the ground around the base of your pot (you can use bricks or rock if no coat hangers) Put a loop in one end of a piece of string, use this loop around the branch you want to LST by feeding the single end through the loop (around the branch), You can, depending on the material, poke the stakes into the base of the pot and tie down from there.

With you on the coat hangers Maxxy.

Interesting watching this going. So you started mid Nov and you seem to have done good so far, mid Dec. Just natural light? Seems a speedy grow! Congrats. I'm soaking all this up for a go myself!

I germinated on father's day, so early Sept.

I only keep it outside. Move it under cover when it's going to rain, but always out in the open without shade otherwise.

I'll take some more pics on Sunday, but it's had a very good week this week, I might move it to a bigger pot on Sunday to cash in on some sunny weather forecasted next week

so I was getting nervous watching the cricket and needed something to do.

I ended up going to a hydro shop to buy some air pots but it was locked up, looked like it was closed. Then I decided to just make my own! *note I had had a few bevies at this stage*

I drilled out a PE pot, which is 400mm diameter - approximately twice as big as the pot I had it in previously.

The transplant went well-ish. Its pretty droopy at the moment as I watered it pretty well before and after the pot transplant. Ill let it dry out over the next couple of days in the sun.

I only went up to 400mm, which is double and approximatley 30L,as I dont want it so big that I cant hide it or it is too big to move.

Attached are all the pics. Ill post some more tomorrow when it is, hopefully, standing tall in the sunshine.

hi roy,

looking great mate. I like the move to a bigger pot

& the idea of the holes too….big fan of o2 to roots….but watch out for getting too much of a good thing

reckon she'll love the bigger pot and better drainage through Dec, but may run into problems in Jan

(soil surface is now much bigger & the core of the pot has lost a lot of protection)

suggest buying a second, identical pot

If you run into moisture problems, slipping your pot into the new one will help.  Good to have it there for transplant, if needed.

get a light colour in preference to black.

and mulch is great at any time. Year-old pea straw is awesome, anything hay is good. Old is better imo.

Anyway yep, she's a cracker. Doing a really good job there.

That photo is fuzzy, but looks girly to me too  :)

Some update photos are attached.

A little upset that one of the colas has bent at the top due to too much wind this morning (circled in the third picture).

The big pot seems to be doing the trick.

I ordered a digital microscope off ebay yesterday so I will be able to get some close up pics when I have the microscope next year.

Merry Christmas everyone, happy growing season!

Roy.

Hi All,

Updated photos are attached.

The couple of 40deg+ days took a bit of a toll on the plant, definitely looking a little tired, less green and leaves starting to bend a bit. Any suggestions for good heat stress treatments?

Also, there more and more lower leaves turning yellow at the bottom and dying off. Any serious problem here?

Cheers,

Roy
