MAGNETIC Island police found an estimated $12,000 worth of dry cannabis and hundreds of cannabis plants growing in a back yard on the island.

A tip-off from the public led police to 206 cannabis plants, including 78 mature plants between 1.8m and 2.4m tall, and 2kg of dried cannabis estimated to have a street value of $12,000.

Police also seized a considerable quantity of cash and property from the home.

Officer-in-charge of Magnetic Island police Sergeant Kerry Kraut said a 52-year-old island resident was charged with five drug offences.

Among the charges were production of a dangerous drug, supplying a dangerous drug, possession of property used in the commission of a crime and possession of tainted property.

Sgt Kraut said police would allege the man was supplying cannabis to the local Townsville area.

"It is a substantial seizure for this area," Sgt Kraut said.

"Police believe the seizure will have an influence on the availability of cannabis in the area."

Police raided the home on Friday following information from the public.

The man will appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on July 13.
