'Dickhead' ads to turn kids off pot

A bold advertising campaign that aims to wipe out marijuana's reputation as a "soft" drug will hit NSW cinemas this week.

The latest phase in the state government's cannabis awareness program was launched to screen before movies throughout the school holidays.

The advertisements, which will also be displayed in cinema bathrooms, bus shelters and on buses, highlight adverse health effects, physical dangers and social impacts of using the drug.

One includes the ad-line: "Pot. It mightn't kill you. But it could turn you into a dickhead."

NSW Special Minister of State John Della Bosca said the ads were aimed squarely at young people to show cannabis was not a "soft" or "recreational" drug.

"Cannabis is not harmless," Mr Della Bosca said in a statement.

"It can cause significant health and social problems and we need to get that message to young people in ways they can relate to and in places where they go."

A key message in the series is that cannabis affects driving ability.

"Young people need to be aware that driving when affected not only puts their own lives at risk, but the lives of those around them," he said.

Similar advertisements aimed at parents of teenagers will air on community radio stations in eight languages.

The campaign is the latest phase of a $495,000 program which Mr Della Bosca describes as "unashamedly forthright".

It follows on from the "loser" poster series launched last January and a radio series on a user called Johnny which aired last June.

I agree totally with what you have all said.

I have NEVER heard of any one dying from an overdose of pot.

I have heard of 16 year old girls dying from taking one ecstacy tablet .

Go figure !

Kat, I turn into a complete PRICK when i got a gutful of grog in me,that is one of the reason's why i and my wife prefer that i smoke.

They tried prohibition once, and that worked REAL well . :P

When is the govt going to wake up and de-criminalise pot and concentrate on the drugs, man made chemical drugs of death, that actually do cause death amongst the youth(our future)and do something about them.

Hmmmmm ! I think our pollies have got there priorities a little bit scrwed up.

The Premier of NSW brother being a heroin addict may not anything to do with it !

Well,i think i have ranted for long enough.

Peace. :o

"Pot. It mightn't kill you. But it could turn you into a dickhead."

There must be a lot of pot smokers in government then. :P

That would make a great poster. I might run off a few colour prints at 'Office Works'. Then paste them over the governments tired old campaign advertisements in cinema bathrooms. I'm an avid movie goer so its no sweat. Will give people something to laugh about while they take a crap.

Cannabis is a lot less harmful than cigarettes, alcohol or coffee. Not smoking it mightn't save your life but it could turn you into a hypocrite.

Couldn't have put it better, Kat.

One other thing....if the govt is so anti pot, why are they allowing movie after movie depicting pot smoking (and indeed all drug taking) as cool?

I would be interested to hear some reactions to this example of govt "double speak"

By the way, Buddy, I know of plenty of terrorists who aren't Muslims

One dictionary gives this definition of the word "terrorist" :

"One who governs by terrorism or intimidation"

and this one for "terrorism":

"The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons."

make no mistake, Buddy;there are "terrorists" in any race colour or creed, including ours.
