Do seedbanks ever give "dud" seeds?

Recommended Posts

Ok so recently i bought a bunch of seeds from a seedbank, Only one of them cracked in the cup and produced a tap root, the others ended up sitting there for about 1 week with no change, no crack, no tap root.... I ended up just throwing them all in the bin..

I received my 2nd out of my 3rd order of seeds 3 days ago, and the same thing is happening, there are no changes in the seeds sitting in the cups, some of the bag seed i had in there has cracked and shown tap roots, but none of the actual good ones are changing.....

So im wondering if its possible to get dud seeds from seedbanks?

Before you throw out any more you might want to try the paper towel method, works for me 9/10. And what doesn't pop that way may in about a week in a pot, kept moist and warm.

You might also want to try putting a bit of sandpaper in a matchbox (or similar) and put some seed in and shake. Roughens the seed surface so it more easily takes up moisture.

Cool thanks guys, I will try both methods, ( about 50$ worth of seeds here ) my 3rd order which is on the way was just under 100$ and i really dont want to throw anymore away... What gets me is that the NL seed i had was cracked and tap rooted in 1 night, about 12 hours or so, Must be a goody.

I've had hit and miss results myself, generally getting close to 100% success or failure with any batch of seeds using the method of 24hrs in water then into damp cotton wool.  There are techniques for reluctant seeds such as freezing then thawing out first, scuffing, gently cracking open etc.  Having said that, some more experienced growers have been known to get success with the same batch of seeds that I completely fail with.

Whether specific breeders or seed banks have good or bad reputations for seed viability, I have no idea.  I feel your pain though Herby, I know how frustrating it is to spend money on wanted genetics only to watch them go nowhere.  And strangely enough I've had more success with the free seeds????

Ive bought two batches off of seed banks. The ones ive recieved are pale, small crappy seeds that did not crack. I believe they are all over priced and in english pouds which makes it dearer, when they are supposily come from Amerdam. I would much rather bank on getting good genitics from aussie bag seed.

Hi Herby

Im really sorry to hear about your seed cracking experiences and money wasting ventures..  as its winter atm .. im thinking your problem might be temp related, not so much product related.. as im of the belief a business like a seed bank wouldnt be in the business of sending out rubbish product for growers to talk about..its not the best business model imo..

in saying that ive never bought seed yet..so i cant say with experience.. but given how easy my crappy bagseed  can germ, given the right environment..   I go with  a Warm Moist Dark spot .. in paper towel on a plate works for me..  not too wet because they can drown.

best of luck with it all

Peace

seedbanks generally dont give a shit how long they have seeds on thier shelf, 'course dont expect them to throw seeds away cause they may have been in stock for a few years

someone has to buy them before they will stock fresh batches

unregulated industry

anything goes

Dog's breakfast

anyhow when you do get some good germination genes be sure to make yourself some beans

and you'll have great germination rates happily ever after and save scores of $ as well
