Early sexing outdoors ?

Recommended Posts

Yes thanks PsychoHashy, I've seen pre flowers before, I understand what your saying. Its a good feeling seeing those early pistils.

Thanks for advice everyone. I have a plan coming together, holes are dug and refilled with some good shit , and worm farm is going strong, ......common spring..

Hey there, I'm an outdoor gal and for the first time last season bought fem seeds (Bonza Seeds = awesome) and will never go back. As much as I love the challenge/science of sexing early it is, in my experience, pretty hit and miss. The most consistent success I had (13/14 100% females one year) was catching them during their natural pre-flowering phase. I examined the nodes (particularly the top few)with a magnifying glass on every plant (in pots in the orchard) most days for a couple of weeks from the 3-4 week mark from memory and voila,13/25 developed pistils and all 13 ended up being 100% female. I had a crack at the cutting/cup method one year (2/25 responded), another year banged them all in the spare room overnight for a week or more (again only a handful responded). Hope you have an awesome season.

Hey Husky,

In the past I've had 100% success identifying sex from pre-flowers.

Last year I put seedlings into 1.5L airpots and waited until they showed pre-flowers before planting out.  All the plants showed pre-flowers by about the 8th node.  However, by then they had well and truly outgrown the 1.5L pots so I think the plants were somewhat stunted from being left in the small pots for so long.  This year I will be planting my regular seeds into 1 gallon [3.7L] airpots so the plants get to develop nicely whilst I'm waiting for them to show sex.  I will be topping and taking cuttings to sex if they haven't shown sex by approx the 8th node.

My point is that if you're going to wait until the 6th - 8th node anyway, you should probably be able to identify the sex by then without having to manipulate the light hours.

However, I grew out one Fast Neville from a feminised seed which was 5 foot tall and still hadn't shown any pre-flowers!

Just my experience and hopefully I will fine tune it this year.  This year I'm growing C99 which is supposed to mature and show sex relatively quickly.

Good luck with your grow.

Hi Missrachael and Crowsange.

Thanks heaps for advice, as I have said elsewhere I haven't grown for 20 years. This year is going to be a bit of a re education and I'm expecting to make some mistakes.

My 2 month old worm farm is going nuts and really surprising me, since I read the are very slow in winter,  fascinating to care for and grow these.

I remember seeing female pre-flowers on some plants, cant remember if there are male pre- flowers?

It maybe that anything that didn't show female pre flowers was likely male ?

Anyway, not far from kick off time here and doing what preparation I can. Got a 1100mm x1100mm x 400mm greenhouse ready, about 100 jiffy's, trays and 70 new 125mm pots. Now there's a clue.

I have Southern Stars, GG Allin, Ragnar Lodbrock, Old Toby, Super Deluxe, Event Horizon, Walter White, Gold Rush  and a pack of All stars that I probably wont open.

That's 100% indica's , 60-40, 50-50, 40-60, and 100% sativa's. I am looking to find something that suits me and my nerve pain, muscle spasms. Have enough raw heads for a year and make some bubble hash, oil as well.

Really only starting with so many because of expected losses and 50% males. I have a very health natural bush around me, full of Roo's, goannas, possums, termites, birds etc  some will be in prepared holes ( really big holes) others will be in 60L pots in case I need to move them around.

I may do a half assed diary, or throw up some photos. I learnt to be very cautious years ago and it served me well, no internet back then. So I am wanting to share ( maybe just vanity) and wanting to say nothing.....  I understand indoor people sharing ideas and techniques, whole different world of problems.

Cheers

Exciting times grassface, I've been growing for 6 seasons (still a newbie for sure) and love it. I learn so much every year. Just planted my gals today, they're in the kitchen tonight (4 deg outside brrr), greenhouse tomorrow (a sunny 18 deg or thereabouts).....yeehaaa the journey begins.

Hey Husky, great to hear you're back growing, your situation sounds really similar to mine. I only ever saw pistil pre-flowers. The ones that don't show aren't necessarily all males in my experience. Some never show. A few develop later if you're lucky. I used to ditch the long lanky ones if I needed to cull and didn't ever have too many males pop up. Poor buggers, always feel a little sad when I have to rip them out but it is lovely to see them go all the same. Will get back to you again, thanks for you message, look forward to hearing more :0).

Good choice in seeds, glad people are thinking for themselves now.

Dont know if the answer has been given yet but I would be taking labelled cuttings from your plants rather than flowering the whole thing and going for reveg.

Preflowers as mentioned is always a good start if they show.

GG Allin will knock you off your feet,

Super Deluxe will always be in my garden, best daytime smoko

and Event Horizon gave some of the best looking buds I've ever seen.

Looking forward to the grow! Good luck
