Early sexing outdoors ?

Recommended Posts

As I have said before, I haven't grown for 20 years, but I have a few good seasons experience, just growing selected bagseed.

This year I want to do a organic outdoor grow, I have a bunch of regular seeds ( not feminised). I use to just pull and burn my boys as they showed, but It takes time, effort and space to grow the boys till they sex naturally.

I have less energy, space and I don't want double up plant numbers if I don't have to. I would like to harvest some pollen however.

So I've been searching and goggling and cant find help, so I will ask here.

My idea is to germinate, then into jiffy pots ( as before). I used to plant straight into prepared hole, but if I was to move to , say a 8 inch pot and once they are up about 6-8 nodes, can I bring them inside the potting shed to shorten daylight hours, forcing them to sex early.

I see guys doing this under lights indoors, I'm trying to mimic this. It will be a pain to do this for 2-3 weeks. But easier in the long run, and I can save the 1 male per stain I want and keep it in a large pot and get it away from girls.

Has anyone tried this, or something like it.  I don't want to do anything under lights.

There is also the large reduction in total plants, in worse case of Officer dibble knocking my door down. He don't care if it a boy or girl. Ideally Id like to end up with 5 -10 full grown girls. That should be enough for a year for me, to make oil, make hash, and make mistakes.

I know some will think, why not buy fem seeds in first place, briefly, I tried overseas and got burnt and customs took 3 sends. So then I found SSS, that are regular and that cools, but I don't want to grow 10-15 males if I don't have to.

Hey husky.

If was me i would start em off in pots and get em to what ever size suits u.

Then u can put away so they get 12 hours of dark to make them flower to show sex.

As they start to show u can remove them put in ground to reveg and keep growing till flower time and keep kill any males u want to get pollen from...

Thanks Ozzy

That is exactly what I was suggesting to try, you just explained it better.  Just wondering if any one had tried before and maybe had advise on any potential problems.

I'm inexperienced at manipulating plants light cycle and don't want to kill them. I'll have to diligent and bring them in everyday like clockwork ?

Put a wheelie bin over the plants to induce darkness at 6pm until dark, then remove once it's dark - that way you don't have to get up and do it in the morning. Easier than moving pots and replanting. Of course, not necessarily practical to cover 20 odd plants all at once. Edited by saxman

It's not quite as accurate as briefly forcing flowering, but sexing from pre flowers is close.  Only problem is if you get strains or individual plants that are reluctant to show pre flowers.  I usually start looking with a magnifying glass once they get to 6-7 nodes, working up from the 5th where the base of the branch comes off the trunk, in behind those little flap thingies.  Some are a little indeterminate, but if they spit out pistils you're golden.

Another method I've heard of is to take clones and force them into flower, which seems like a good idea to me if you've got the time and resources.
