Busted: Drug ring cracked, 12 arrested during raids

Saturday, 22 May 2004

POLICE believe they have cracked another major Bendigo drug trafficking ring, with 12 people arrested during raids on city properties yesterday.

Thousands of dollars in cash, three cars, mobile phones, illegal drugs and stolen property were seized during raids conducted by 37 police officers and the Melbourne-based dog squad. Partygoers at a house in Golden Square stood handcuffed along a fence, sat cross-legged on the front porch and perched in deck chairs while police searched the property early yesterday morning. The raids continued on houses in Kennington and Flora Hill, where the parents of an accused teenage drug trafficker arrived home to the sight of detectives combing their property for drugs.

The 18-year-old male is alleged to be one of the "major players" in the drug syndicate. He faces a raft of charges, including trafficking a large commercial quantity of ecstasy and trafficking amphetamines and cannabis. A 23-year-old Bendigo woman, who police believe is also at the centre of the drug trafficking operation, faces 24 charges.

The pair made no application for bail during a brief appearance in the Bendigo Magistrate's Court yesterday. Both were remanded to reappear in court on Monday. Yesterday's drug bust comes just one week after a major Bendigo methylamphetamine trafficking syndicate was smashed, resulting in 30 arrests.

More than 220 charges were laid following the four-month police investigation known as `Operation Jades'.

A 48-year-old Strathfieldsaye woman is accused of leading the drug trafficking operation in which methylamphetamines, with an estimated street value of $150,000, were purchased from Melbourne and sold in Bendigo.

Well, Bendigo has always been a hotbed for this sort of thing. Mind you a fair few of the "accused" are local football identities.

Noticed the girl at the centre of the "allegations" is a bit of a stunner..will try and attach a pic.

While on the subject of Bendigo, a few years ago there was a hydro shop there where the cops rented the shop opposite and photographed everyone who entered the place making for around 80 easy arrests several months after it opened.

Needless to say it closed soon after.

LESSON TO BE LEARNED..as hard as it is, don't shop local! :D
