Greens back pedal on drugs policy

The Australian Greens have backpedalled on their policy to decriminalise all types of drugs.

Greens policy documents on the party's website state that illegal drugs should be decriminalised and regulated to improve health and well-being.

When questioned about the policy on the Nine Network's Sunday program, Greens senator Bob Brown said despite criminalisation of drugs having failed tough controls were needed on those who peddled drugs.

"As far as I'm concerned where criminals are involved in peddling drugs they should go to jail," Senator Brown said.

Senator Brown, a qualified GP, also said he did not believe drugs should be promoted.

"I'm a doctor - they are destructive to peoples' health," he said.

"There's a lot of drugs in our community and rather than people going to jail when they are caught with those drugs they should be given good social and medical advice and assistance."

Senator Brown said he would not strongly promote the Greens' drugs policy at the next election.

"It isn't on the agenda at the moment," he said.

The Australian Greens drug policy has never been at the forefront on the election agenda, primarily because it's a state matter and not federal, the policy has been on the Greens site for over ten years and it has taken the media this long to find it, pretty slack. ::D:
